i recently brought home two more tangs, my question is "how many gallons is your tank?how many, and what kinds, of tangs live there?"
i rarely follow the recommendations.
my tang stock is in 210g

hippo
powder brown
scopas
clown

"new"
mimic half black
convict

this is kind of what I'm getting at, some of the things that I Found recommended , I find to be the opposite for me. I'm not sure if its a good thing or a bad thing but I have had the best luck with wild fish right out of the bag out of the shipment from Indo that any fish that has been supposably eating in a pet store.no I'm not saying for one minute that recommendations shouldn't be followedhowever kinda standing by the same old thing Of, everyone's tank is different.

sometimes I think recommendations are the best of one's knowledge. I however like to test all boundaries :-) I really hope the tang police are not on this forum.....lol

yes there's one Tang I've had it for almost 9 years, now it might be a little early to say but the convict is not getting picked on by five other different species of surgeon fish.

240g 8' tank
Vlamingi
Sailfin
Hippo
Mimic
Kole
Don't have any issues with any of them.

A friend of mine has had 3 tangs in her 240g for the past 5 or so years. She has a yellow, a powder blue and a naso. The powder blue is "boss" fish, not just among the tangs but among the whole tank and she has a lot of big fish! The naso is one of her most shy elusive fish but still very healthy.

Not acting like a tang police at all but a purple in a 120 sounds like it could be hell. They are usually the bullys. How does it work for you.

That is really interesting my powder brown is the baby of the bunch

I am heading for the do's and don'ts that have been perceived, more or less feeding habits and aquarium territories for the take your species is very interesting to me

the mimic doesn't bother anyone a? do you see any specific territories being guarded
Nope, nobody bothers anyone. Hippo gets frisky sometimes, but usually just a quick chase and shes' done. But the mimic doesn't bother a soul.

My tank is about 525 gallons. Have a kole, yellow, blue hippo, mimic yellow, chevron, sailfin, and 2 Atlantic blues. These 8 get along well without aggression. Hope to add pairs of powder blues, white cheeks and then I will see. I believe you need to QT and then add the tangs in a small group to be successful. Young tangs in pairs or trios can be added with success in a large tank. Others (like Dan Feig) have had luck with this method in a large system. Key is space and hiding areas. Good luck.

thank you very much for your input, unfortunately I don't believe in corn Teen Ink fish.. 15 years of getting wild ones without much of a scratch tells me I shouldn't change what I haven't broke. I really appreciate your input as a lot of people say you can't keep a lot of times in a tank. if you do get them to breed please read night this thread as I am very interested. thank you very much for your comment

I use QT to feed and fatten the tangs prior to release. I watch for infection and mainly bulk them up prior to introduction into my DT. I think I will ultimately have 20 or more in my system once complete. Good luck.

Wow like I said I don't believe in quarantine.y fish but it seems like you have a wonderful system going to keep it up and good luck

Good luck to you as well. Tangs are such great fish: beautiful, have personalities, and work (eat algae) for a living! Great in a mixed reef. I have LPS/SPS.

Just added a tomani tang to my cube tonight. He started eating off the glasses pretty much right away. I hope to have him fat and happy for a long while.

I have a yellow tang, a hippo and an orange shoulder tang. The yellow is a bully and usually goes after any new tangs I put in. The weird thing is that both times I have added a new tang I got mad that he was being a bully and chased him around the tank with a net for an hour trying to catch him. Both times, he stopped picking on the new fish after I chased him. Very weird, but they all swim together now. I really want a purple tang as well but I'm not sure that would work out well :p. Have a 6' 125g.
