I just got off the phone with Marineland and they said that using shims under the stand will void the warranty. Can that be right?? They said I should just place it on the floor even if it is unlevel

That would be a first to hear. I can't imagine them saying to place it on a unlevel floor without shimming the stand. That would be counterintuitive and depending on how bad the floor was unlevel, could put a huge stress on the silicone seams of the tank.

If they said this, I would completely disregard this advise and level the stand.

I'm sure they didnt say put it on an unlevel floor. They said go ahead and put the tank on an unlevel stand, the floor being level is probably implied. I can sort of see where they are coming from warranty wise, but it might be a distinction without much of a difference.

In this case, if the stand is warped I would return it and get a replacement.

its the same thing. un-level floor with level stand or un-level stand on level floor is still un-level...

Hence, my distinction without a difference comment, at least in regards to the consumer.

I imagine most people do not have a perfectly level floor. I've heard that you can't shim between the tank and stand but I've always shimmed between the floor and and stand. Right now it's off level about 1/4 inch side to side. It's a 4 foot tank

I'm guessing from a warranty standpoint if something were to happen they could argue the shimming caused failure and the stand was fine. Because how could they prove you leveled it correctly? Not really sure though.

I think the safest way to shim is put another board under the stand and shim that, not the stand itself.

This is what it is now. Should I just not shim? It's perfect front to back

I have always shimmed the stand level. Place tank and stand and check tank itself. Readjust if necessary. Doesn't sound right that they would have you place a tank on an unleveled stand. I would seek clarity on this from a manager before proceeding.
