Leveling stand voids warrenty??

Shimming will actually cause more harm than good. It will definitely create pressure points. The bottom of the stand distributes the weight. I would not want all that weight concentrated on a few shims.

Maybe a good idea, or maybe a bad idea...

Build a 2x4 frame for the stand to sit on. Attach levelers to 2x4 frame.

Use however many, based on weight..

?

They make them on stainless too..

I'm assuming, marineland is the stand maker?

One reason not to shim some stands, is that it goes from distributing the weight through the whole stand, to transferring all of the weight to the pressure points where the stand touches the ground and where the shims are.

It's not obvious when it's so close to the floor, but it's analogous to placing a tank directly on a concrete pad VS placing it across a few 2nd story floor joists. While a short height, it's still enough for the materials of the stand to deflect, just like floor joists would.

Ask them how it would affect the warranty if you were to have a professional cabinet maker profile the bottom of the stand so that it would sit level on your floor without shims.

It's actually an R & J stand. It's off so slight that it probably makes sense to leave as is...

I have always been told an un level tank will put more pressure on the low side of the tank and causing failure. There is no way in hell I wouldn’t level the tank.

My Waterbox 190 stand has bolt adjustments all over the bottom for a reason. So I can level it. I would not have a unleveled tank for many reasons. It would drive me crazy looking at the waterline

I would guess that it's more important for flat bottom tanks....visually my tank currently looks level...

Do they even warranty a tank if it is not on their stand?

I was shocked to see this is their warranty for stands when I purchased mine. It was in the paperwork with the stand. Luckily I had a level floor to begin with. I have heard the warranty support isn't very good from them anyway.....

I don't see anything in the warranty that prohibits shimming the stand. Of course, only the bottom of the stand should be shimmed, which is really a matter of leveling the floor.
And I'm no lawyer, but the language in the warranty would also place the onus on Marineland to prove that the stand was not adequate to support the aquarium. They are not going to pursue this over the cost of a warranty claim.

Even if the aquarium/stand was left out of level by 1/4" over 4', the additional forces on the aquarium are miniscule. The situation would need to be much worse than this to be cause for structural concerns. But for peace of mind, I would definitely shim the stand if it was measurably out-of-level. Be sure to shim wherever the construction of the stand transfers the weight to the floor. For a 4' stand, this is typically at each corner and at the midpoint of the front and back.

Was pretty specific in the warranty paper given to me when purchasing my stand. Place on dry and level surface, not to shim the stand or void warranty. Local fish store I purchased it from made sure to point it out to me, that any water damage or damage due to use of shims would not be cover under warranty. Just what I received with my stand purchased 2 years ago. Maybe it has changed in this time.... Maybe not. This is also written in the warranty for the stand and not the one for the tank

Good points, Lance, and improper shimming could certainly be an issue with the warranty for the stand. A poor job of shimming the stand could cause damage to the stand even if it does not negatively affect the aquarium.

How would they know if you put shims under the stand?

I'd level it.

I got a marineland 75 gallon tank and found a crack by the overflow. while on the phone with customer service. I found a second crack in the overflow. I ran my finger over it in the tank and then ran my finger over the crack on the outside and felt it there. they also asked for pictures. which I gladely provided. the rep asked me for pictures of the cracks and then an overall picture of the tank. nothing of the floor or where it meets the floor. also asked me for a copy of the receipt and the label that was on the tank. which I had all of so I sent pictures and the receipt.
