I’d start with getting them eating Metro. Then clearing the external guys is easier IMO.

Paul..are you the one who used to have the “feeder?!” There was a Paul B I thought that had made a DIY fish feeder that was really neat. I was gonna replicate it, but I lost the picture.

I think in most cases everybody wants to do something and most LFS and Wholsalers try to treat the fish. It’s just very difficult to do. In the video, most of the stores had some form of treatment being implemented.

The problem is that we’re not just dealing with one disease here. It’s multiple parasites, protozoa, bacteria, etc. You run into gram-negative and gram-positive infections. There’s viral infections. Cross contamination is a huge issue. It’s hard to keep things clean when you have multiple tanks going at one time. Then you have the possibility of airborne transmission.

We should try our best not to be so harsh and do what we can to educate and keep learning so that we all can share information and change things for the better in the future. Otherwise we may not have people that want to start an LFS or be in Wholesale. Then there will be no fish or corals to buy.

You bring up some great points. I work with salmonids at a state facility which is open to the public. I may have 1,000 trout in one tank, but the public will notice the one sick fish that hasn't responded to cures or is still healthy enough to avoid the net. Watching the video didn't horrify me, I saw some healthy fish in those tanks as well. We follow strict quarentines/disinfections to the point of only bringing in fish eggs that can be disinfected and only from certified sources. Occasionally live fish may be transferred, but that is only from certified stations from lots that have been tested for the diseases of greatest concern like viral and bacterial.

What should have happened to those sick fish is remove them from the display and put in the back of the house in QT or euthanized if they are too far gone.

Yeah, I hear you bro. It’s hard. Most of us including those who are trying to profit don’t wanna see sick fish or dying fish. It happens though. If we all work together and continue study, learn, educate, vlog, document, treat, share information, experiment, etc. imagine where the hobby will go in the next 30 years.

We didn’t learn how to fly to the moon in 50 years...it’s taken a long time to be able to successfully get there and back.

Just because somebody is experienced or a long tenured reefer that doesn’t make it right.

Nor wrong .... I’m simply suggesting that since QT remains a somewhat controversial topic, it’s hardly surprising that various LFS will have varied views. Again, I’d personally not view skipping QT as necessarily disqualifying. YMMV.

No doubt. However, with recent outbreaks and conditions seemgly to be getting much worse, is a no QT approach even workable anymore? Ich is one thing and can apparently be managed, but uronema, velvet and bacterial infections appear be, in many cases a death sentence. I am new to the hobby, so I dont have the persective of how things were back in the day. I guess we all will find out as this thing plays out.

Please don’t misunderstand my point. I’m firmly comitted to quarantining new fish, and have been doing so longer than many of those that so ardently advocate the practice have been in the hobby. I’m simply suggesting that its controversial to some, including some LFS. It certainly does seem like the fish supply chain is well contaminated, and QT probaly more necessary today than in the past.
