LFS "We don't quarantine, it's not necessary"

Is there a procedure for QT new CUC? Read below...

Uhhhhh so i go to LFS to buy frozen mysis shrimp and figure I will grab a couple snails for CUC cause they always go missing. In the same tank as the nerith snails are 3-4 clownfish with bloated tummys swimming in literal barrel rolls. Like I've never seen this before, as if they were attached by the bum to a power drill.

I told them "I don't really quarantine properly my new CUC, I'm lazy. I don't want something out of this tank as there is obviously an issue with it." but nicer.

She tells me they don't quarantine anything, never have. I have always been happy with this place, other than the advice of "cycle your tank with 70 lb dry rock 5 lb of our $9/lb live rock and 40 lb of our pricy live sand and a yellowtail."

Where do I buy CUC online, reputable, and non-expensive? Or can i freshwater bath them and kill anything they might transport?

I'd pass on the nerith snails (though they may be fine). It's really hard to QT inverts, which is why I suspect most places don't do it. Keeping (obviously) ill fish with inverts isn't the best course of action, though.

If you put any cuc in freshwater, you'll kill them.

You "could" put them in a fishless (observational only) QT for 45 days,,, or whatever your accepted time length is but, of course, that's work on your end.

I'm currently creating my order. They have packages with free shipping. Have to spend a significant amount for free shipping. I don't need $65 worth of product. Is it worth it to pay the shipping, or should I just buy excess CUC? Can a tank "too clean"?

nerith snails are worthless IMO.

Trochus snails are the ones you want mostly.

Astraea snails are also pretty good, they look almost exactly like Trochus snails, but the difference is Astrea snails have a harder time getting upright if knocked over and they will often die. So you just have to turn them over when you find them.

Some people like Mexican Turbo's. They'll eat a lot of algae, but they are bigger, seem to die within 6 months and can bulldoze. I tend to stay away from them personally, but some people love them for their appetite.

How old is your tank and how big?

It is a little over 4 months, 75 gallons. Just started growing diatoms, not too bad currently, 5 hermits are eating it. two orphek led bars over it run 8 hrs a day

I think you should be able to spend $65 on a tank of that size without issue.

The only way to be sure your CUC is free of parasites is to leave them in a fishless system for... 76 days I think? However long the longest lifecycle parasite is. I think thats ich. You could use TTM and be done much quicker. Freshwater dips and copper are sadly just as deadly to the CUC we use as parasites we try to prevent.

I get all my CUC from Reef Cleaners and I've never had an issue with parasites. I had a DOA urchin one time and it was immediately refunded with an apology. Everything else has come in very healthy and in the size i ordered or larger. I've been happily doing business with them for several years now.

+1 on Reef Cleaners. For whatever reason their CUC actually lives much longer in my tank than my local LFS inverts do. Plus Reef Cleaners has better pricing anyway

OOh john has chitons, get a couple if he has them in stock. Great CUC! I would almost datre say best, but they are not a common stock item and many people don't know how well they work.
