LFS "We don't quarantine, it's not necessary"

I'm currently creating my order. They have packages with free shipping. Have to spend a significant amount for free shipping. I don't need $65 worth of product. Is it worth it to pay the shipping, or should I just buy excess CUC? Can a tank "too clean"?
Is the free shipping overnight or priority mail?

Spend the $50...if you have to. How far is Indiana from Florida? Three days? Four? It takes all of four days for me in Vermont and it is getting HOT down there, have had loss doing priority mail. The last order I did was about $50 worth of product and got them the next day. My snails from him usually last pretty long, except for the Mexican Turbos...but they do a good job when around.

nerith snails are worthless IMO.

Trochus snails are the ones you want mostly.

Astraea snails are also pretty good, they look almost exactly like Trochus snails, but the difference is Astrea snails have a harder time getting upright if knocked over and they will often die. So you just have to turn them over when you find them.

Some people like Mexican Turbo's. They'll eat a lot of algae, but they are bigger, seem to die within 6 months and can bulldoze. I tend to stay away from them personally, but some people love them for their appetite.
All spot on (I also like nassarius) trochus are worth the extra buck. Your astreas will lay on their back until a hungry hermit comes along and takes that shell

I quarantine my corals and inverts for 6 to 8 weeks in a separate tank. Ich life cycle 21 to 28 days typically. I believe it was a colder tank that hit the 72 day mark Ill take my risk at 45 to 60 day mark.

I haven't qt in the 10yrs I've done this. Lol.
Seems to be alright imo.
I don't order stuff direct from sir Lanka. If all my stuff came in like live rock from the gulf or similar yes I would qt but they essentials are already doing it for you. The animals are transfered from tanks to tanks. At the holding center. The fish store. Ect.

Also that sounds like a good for sure way to cycle a tank... the damsel fish will most likely be ok and live. Will exp some spikes in anomina and such ect but probably not lethal levels with the sand and the chunk of live rock.
D

Would anyone recommend setting up a qt tank for your microalgae and cuc and dosing that aquarium with Ruby Reef Rally and kick ich at the same time. Because they are reef safe medication it doesn't have anything that should kill your cuc or microalgae but it somehpw kills a lot of fish diseases and parasites.

He's got a limit of 3 trochus snails, and they're $4.50 a pop. They must really be something.

This is my order - shipping out on Monday, I'll let everyone know how clean the tank is.

Thank you everyone for all your help.

Also wanted to grab some fuzzy chitons but they weren't able to be shipped with the free shipping after $65, so will have to wait on them. There were plenty in stock

just a heads up those ‘dwarf’ snails are like microscopic - less than 1/4”. I got a bunch and they are slowly but surely growing

Not sure I see a sandbed noted anywhere. You sand or barebottom?

just got a shipment from him Thursday. I did the free shipping as well and everything came in alive and moving. I wouldn’t spend the money on empty shells if I was you. just buy a few more live snails and crabs. You will eventually have a few deaths of each and then you will have empty shells laying around.

I have about 3" of very fine live sand. 60 pounds, 75g so it's about 3" unless my stupid wave maker becomes detached again and blows it everywhere...

I bought the empty shells more for the aesthetic appeal, but yes the morbidity rate will most likely free up some new homes for all these little critters. Is it weird that I name all my CUC too?
