License to Sell Frags?

I'm sure most of us are well aware of invasive species decimating the native animals. But this sounds more like a revenue method to me. My local health department informed me that a permit in now required to build a dog house. I live out in the country on 70 acres a long way from the city. Are they afraid the dog house will endanger the local wildlife? Are they really going to send out an inspector to check it or is it just another way to tax us? Requiring hobbyists to pay for a permit is nothing to do with anything but getting an extra fee brought in.

Its probably more along the lines of they want to make sure it is anchored properly in the event of a storm so it is not blown all around to cause damage. Obviously in your case its not going to happen but in a more crowded area its a concern. Unfortunately with codes in place you cant pick and chose who to apply it to so all must suffer.

Sorry I missed your question. If you can't find a better option I would just pour the water into a large flat container and allow it to evaporate. Use the same container each time and when the salt builds up enough you can put it into a bag for disposal.

It doesnt have to be planted on purpose to grow out of control. I believe I read somewhere that even a 1/2" peice of chaeto if accidentally dropped into the ocean could grow, thrive, and take over in a matter of no time.

I've had numerous people over the years ask me about it - most serious about attempting their own mariculture.

That's hilarious you have to be crazy to attempt that without knowing its super illegal and how would you even make sure no one else takes your stuff but I guess that's why we have warnings on everything cause people have no common sense.

Only if you qualify as a "business". In order to qualify as a business you have to report a profit 3 out of the first 5 years.

So you can claim your losses for 5 years, but if you don't turn a profit for at least 3 of them, the IRS considers it a 'hobby' and you can no longer claim losses after that. You just pay tax on what you sell.

That's different then from other write off businesses. I've seen tax returns in my line of work for those with businesses and rental properties than have been "turning huge losses" each year for decades. (On paper at least)
