Lighting suggestions please

I've been running the MarsAqua ("Chinese Black Box") 300 watt unit over a 65 gallon tank (same footprint as a 40 breeder) for a year, and have been pretty satisfied with it. (I did lose some corals to lighting issues - but that was because I turned it up too high, and bleached 'em...) It's a 30" unit, and doesn't _really_ use all 300 watts. They're available through Ebay, and generally well within your budget.

Any other brand of led's I should look at. The length of the light i should be looking at?

If they're LED, imo, you'd need two small units on either side. If it was a wider unit then possibly one in the center raised up some for the spread. I was planning to get a 40G I was going to do 2 hydras on each side. Ended up finding something on craigslist a little bigger. Going to see if one Hydra 26HD in the center could run a softy tank with maybe a couple acros towards the top. If not I'll upgrade next year.

What about the orbit marines? I had the same question about affordable led for corals and have been considering the orbit marine pros....would anyone recommend them?
not on a 40 . I thing the 40 is too wide.

Plus 1 on the Reefbreeders!!!! quality and most importantly service and support are second to none.
Your 40 breeder sounds very similar to the 40b that I have. I have been running the Reefbreeders Photon 24 with really good success for a few years now. The Photon V2 is a little above the stated price range, but I think it's worth the little bit extra.
