In November I will be doing a 75g peninsula build and I am trying to plan out what I will need. In the lighting department I am not sure where to go with it. I will pay for good lighting, but don't really want to spend over 800.00, but will if it is obviously worth it. I've seen the advertisement for the new kessil ap700, and am curious.

I want fast growth and coloring.

I have a mix reef.

Let's hear what works.

Thanks for your responses!

I have had the 24" model on this tank for 2 1/2 years

@SB Reef Lights

go with the group buy lights, or if youre not needing them right away hold off for his signature lights. its well worth it and the price is a fraction of lights with equal par/pur

that's actually a really good price for that setup. my only issue with it would be having to replace the factory bulbs for quality bulbs then the constant changing of t5 bulbs. I do love how t5 looks on a nice reef though.
Ib do understand this part of it. I actually use the stock bulbs along with ati bulbs. I use 1 blue and 1 white in my combo. Even if you change all the bulbs for ati you're looking at $100. So $250 to start and $100 every 8-12 months. 4v years later and you're looking at around $750 for lights. I don't know of anyone keeping an led fixture for that long because they upgrade. I don't even know how long one of those led fixtures will even last. I'm sure with time the drivers will go out etc. There's a common misconception that led never lose intensity. They might lose intensity much slower than other traditional lighting, but they still do.

yeah ive had my ebay black box for 2 years. no issues. think I paid like 70 or 80 for it back then lol

yip. I like it. been a great light. grew anything I put under it. in the past ive grown everything I could get my hands on besides acro and clams and ive seen people grow them with these lights. albeit, I think those would do better under the new spectrum that sb has put in his signature lights.

and for 750 bucks every 4 years, I could buy 10 of these lights so even if they didn't last, who cares. you can buy another lol but they do last.

I am just worried about quick growth. I had some corals under my current orbit for awhile. They grew very slowly, but still grew. I moved them to the MH tank and they are going nuts. Never used t5.

In my opinion warm white is the way to go with led. I built a fixture 3 years ago with them and it works well

yeah orbits are pretty much junk. these will grow anything you want and give you "quick" growth. but GENERALLY speaking. this is how coral does under different lights

MH provides the fastest growth, but is very expensive to run, replacing bulbs plus the cost of quality reflectors and ballasts.
t5/t5ho provides good color and good growth and is easy to adjust the spectrum for better colors or better growth, can swap uv bulbs or whatever you want to find the perfect spectrum for what you want. but while t5 looks better than t5, you wont get near the growth.
LED provides the best looks out of a plug and play system. depending on what led fixture you get you can customize the spectrum via a controller. they cost the least to run but can be pricey depending on what you go for. the growth varies greatly based on what fixture you go with. in general they tend to be most expensive to buy out the box, but cost so much less to run and maintain that they pay for themselves. however with the breakthroughs in led technology cheaper fixtures have came to us in form of the Chinese blackboxes. often called *********. these units are cheap to buy, provide great growth and color.

personally if you got the back to support it I feel a proper hybrid of all 3 would be your best bet, but theres not many out there that I would call quality. remember, now a days, expensive doesn't mean quality in this hobby.

contact @SB Reef Lights for more info on his lights. if you don't need a light right away, I would wait until his signature lights come out. you can check out his build thread on his 560 to get an idea of those lights.

yup. if you cant wait and just need lights now, he can direct you to the group buy lights. still amazing lights just not as good as his

A lot depends on what you want to get out of the functionality. lots of good lights out there that will grow coral just fine . but do you want them to just turn off and on. do you want them to dim or brighten at times during the day. do you want more blue less blue more white less.... etc etc through the day It will be an easier decision when you make those decisions ... WIFI .... controller integration bla bla bla

I like the ocean revive Arctic 247. For under $200 a fixture can't beat them. I have a friend that has them and have never seen growth and color like he has
