I would like to try LED. I have read that t5's produce a lot of heat and you have to replace sooner than a LED.

Welcome! T5s can produce some heat depending on how many bulbs you have. LEDs are more expensive up front but last for a long time. I use both.

Welcome! As mentioned above there are plenty of great choices for LED lighting that won't break the bank. A lot of people use the ''eBay fixtures'' but if it were me I would rather spend alittle extra and go for a name brand light ( you will do that in the fire so you might as well do it now) ocean revive makes a great light at a good cost

eBay par165 reef light! Just a simple black box Chinese light but I'm growing SPS easily!!! More than enough light for you to get started and grow.
There really is no Best! Find someone with a tank you love and try to mimick what they do. Over time you'll learn YOUR tank and how to adjust and tweak.

I'm running SB reef lights good price good lights and will grow coral Www.sbreeflights.com Plus if you ever need anything from SB lighting the owner Mike Herman is always there if you need him plus you can find mike on fb to

So if I do go the T5 route. How many bulbs would I need for a 65g for the lighting to be effective?

one thing i learned... the hard way, was to think about the next step before you even take the first one. i started out at the top of the price point with ecotech radion g3's as a newb... cooked everything, all sorts of algaes, frustration beyond belief (wayyyy too much controllability for a newb, intimidated like whoa)... got rid of them, went to kessils, LOVE LOVE LOVE them BUT had a hard time with SPS corals (i have a deeper tank and the 360we's don't penetrate well) so i added a 360N and found my happy spot. kessils are great if you're looking for a set it and forget it type setting but i do run mine with a controller (apex). otherwise you'll have to manually set them throughout the day. I'm not sure how the kessil controller works but if you ask, I'm sure someone would explain it to you. one things I've learned over the last 2 years, you absolutely get what you pay for so be wary of bargain lights in my opinion.

then check into kessils. lps corals LOVE kessils and fortunately you can more than likely find some used ones cheap on here, just pop kessil in the search on the upper RIGHT hand side.
