I picked up a black volitan lion fish from a local he’s big and healthy he’s been in the Tank less than 24 hours. He ate some raw shrimp for me this morning. How long did you have your lion fish till he was out swimming in the front etc the guy I got him from didn’t have ant rock work

I had one of those in a 100g tank. Had him for almost 8 years.
Picked him up and he was about 2 to three inches.
And he was nose to tale in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket when he died.
Long depressing story.

Any way they are not swimmers. He will find a spot and hang out.
As he gets bigger he will have no problem eating other fish, if they will fit in his mouth or not he will try.

I've only had one volitan. He never just swam around. He basically sat on my coral decorations at weird angles.

Such a beautiful fish though.
My guy when he fanned out was the diamiter of a softball.

I had a juvenile draggon wrasse that was around 3-4 inches and used to buzz the lion for fun, then bail into the substrate.
He would do this a lot.
It did not worry me to much as they were about the same length at the time.
I came home one day and the wrasse was not swimming about.
This was not to unusual as he would on ocation bury himself for a day or two.
Then I went to feed the Lion and he refused to eat, I was like what the heck and then saw large protrusions on each side of his belly.
That was that, no more wrasse. I was so bummed out.

So from that point on I just left the two original tank mates in the Aquarium.
The Lion and a Porcupine puffer.

Should I get a pair of rubber gloves for cleaning and coral moving

So mine setting upside down in the rock work is normal for lion

Some how I don't see regular rubber gloves stopping the sting. I doubt anybody has tested if it really works. ;)

It would be more you running into the lion over it coming to attack.

My guy was always more like a 45 degree angle.

Hi @Sexytang

a few quick questions and mentions

Thin rubber gloves will not help, the spines will punch thru.

Do you have him in your 40? They are not big swimmers and they will grow large. They are predators so they like to hunt their pray, but if he is eating shrimp that is good. I used to add silversides and feeders am other things. They do like to sit on rocks , but they will swim but need room.

Will soon outgrow that tank but you have time.
Depending on how stocked your tank is with rock and livestock.

I’ve been adjusting the flow around different in my tank I’m not really sure it’s slot strong but he hasn’t came out to much maybe just adjusting still but I did have decent flow in the front. Will the pulse mode on a jabeo be to much for it with the side to side motion

Because if it can’t take direct flow was thinking of getting a jabeo and doing the waves
