Live rock and dry rock.

I do use rodi water. I do not know where the phosphates are coming from and I have had the lfs test the water I buy with a Hanna checker and I do not feed much at all. Like I said before, I didn't have a skimmer for about 6 months after initial set up. That might have something to do with it. And I also recently blew off the rock work and poop went every where, so that may be it.

I am going to do the lights out thing this weekend. But would not be a good time to add a small gfo reactor?

Dude I would take baby steps before jumping into a reactor...just my opinion. You can always add a media bag to sump...just for peace of mind.

Blackout-not just lights out, cover the tank and black it out. You don't need to remove rocks to scrub them, toothbrush to the rescue. But make sure your sump has a sock or filter something and keep cleaning it...it will get funky. No food...tarp just keep skimming, just keep skimming (yes say it as dori would say it)

Oh and food has PO4..in cubes..so I thaw and net, discard thawing water...

brainstorming....do you have a canister filter? Or a funky hiding spot in sump or system?

I know it's madding, just trying to help. Everyone has been there....diatoms or cyano. You will be triumphant.

I was thinking about getting a reactor for a while cuz I have struggled with this before, but not nearly as bad. Well do lights out and see where I'm at on Monday. But you brush off algae straight off the rock and into the water column? That just sounds like a mess in the tank.

Usually when your just wiping it off, your doing a WC and siphoning it out at the same time.
