What is lost here - is that - if you kill everything on your 'rock' you might as well have bought dead rock in the first place. It seems (to me) to not make sense. There are lots of places that sell 'dry rock'. There is no point to buying live rock and then killing everything on it. Whether you like your rock sparkly white or not - sooner or later its gonna be covered by algae, Coral, etc. This seems like a joke....
LOL ! Careful for the FBI ! ;-)If you do want to actually heat sterilize your rock you could do it in a large pressure cooker (find a large used one at a thrift shop).
What about someone else’s problem live rock that you can get for cheaper than dry rock.
I think what is lost here is the people that can’t see the reason we want to make dry rock in the first place
Thank goodness you have restored my faith why on earth, would you kill live rock, !!! Kind of defeats its very purposePlease forgive me if I'm not understanding but isn't all this bleaching, baking, sun drying defeating the purpose of starting with live rock? Why not just start from scratch and cure some dry rock?
I think it is a joke.. and a sad one at that... the purpose of useing LIVE rock is for the living organisms and algae to condition and filter the water naturally,as well as being a benefit to the fish.but I guess some people don't want to learn anything. What is lost here - is that - if you kill everything on your 'rock' you might as well have bought dead rock in the first place. Or you can look at it as there are many ways to run a reef tank and just because it's different from your approach doesn't make it wrong. Plenty of nice tanks that never started with real live rock. Because someone runs there tank different than you doesn't mean they don't want to learn. I will never use real live rock again. Seeded rock with bacteria from a reputable source is all I will ever use.I think it is a joke.. and a sad one at that... the purpose of useing LIVE rock is for the living organisms and algae to condition and filter the water naturally,as well as being a benefit to the fish.but I guess some people don't want to learn anything.

rock
Ok.. I understand what thay are saying... but seriously killing everything on the rock is just nuts.. I set up my 40 gallon I used base rock and used live rock.. I cleaned the rock with a 30 second swishing in fresh water and vinegar... all the old nasty stuff came off and now look at the rock 3 Months later... it's beautiful, lots of growth of coraline algae, I don't have any pestsDon’t throw out the baby with the bath water.
Yes... all in the bottom of the bucket...Yes but was any of that rock infested with Aiptasia or Bristle worms? Bubble algae or cyano? These things are not going to come off completely with a 30 sec swishing in vinegar and water and then they will infest your new tank.

I need to say.. I'm taking about a 5 gallon bucket 3 gallons of water 1 gallon of white distilled vinegar... the PH is still extremely acidic..Yes... all in the bottom of the bucket...
Thanks. .Looks like a great start. Like the reefscape!
