I have 4 hermit crabs and 1 yellow tail damsel and 1 zoa and green star polip coral.

just took these out of the bleach and made a nanoscape LOL....

now on to the vinegar and they will be just right.....


these came from a tank that was covered in GHA... i got them from the girl and gave her new rock that i had already cleaned along with one of the rocks from my tank to get her up and running... her tank is growing corals now instead of problems.... i had these sitting dry for about a month and then soaked them with my filter socks....

hope those green stars dont take off and choke out everything like they did in my tank....

green stars, blue mushrooms and clove polyps aren't allowed within 50 feet of my tank now...

I also need to add after I cleaned the rock,I gave another rinse with saltwater, also my filter system is a aquatop UV canister filter and a Hob with ceramic filter rings.
The tank had nothing but the rock for a month, running the UV... now I cycle the UV, 1 week on 3 weeks off... and it did look nasty for the first month. But the rock I bought was out of the tank for 48 hours before I got it...
And I understand your concerns, it all depends on how bad the rock is that you get..

Or you can look at it as there are many ways to run a reef tank and just because it's different from your approach doesn't make it wrong. Plenty of nice tanks that never started with real live rock. Because someone runs there tank different than you doesn't mean they don't want to learn. I will never use real live rock again. Seeded rock with bacteria from a reputable source is all I will ever use.

Ya I've seen some nasty rock that the LFS sell... I won't buy it if I see any thing on it besides what is supposed to be on it.. and I also tell them if I do see and bad critters on it..

Yes but was any of that rock infested with Aiptasia or Bristle worms? Bubble algae or cyano? These things are not going to come off completely with a 30 sec swishing in vinegar and water and then they will infest your new tank.

I looked at that picture. . I wouldn't have touched that rock with a ten foot pole ...lol that's the stuff you throw away..

thats the stuff i get for pennies on the dollar and bleach... then it sits in a rubbermaid tote till someone needs good dry rock....

I was lucky, I found a guy tearing down his 210 gallon SPS tank. I bought some of his base rock and didn’t do a thing to it. Never really had an Ugly stage. Just made sure I did a quick transfer and tank never cycled.

Bleach soak for ~7 days, then rinse with RODI. Done!

Never ever ever literally cook live rock. Toxins still attached to the rock can become airborne making anyone in the House very sick!

thats the stuff i get for pennies on the dollar and bleach... then it sits in a rubbermaid tote till someone needs good dry rock....

That piece spent 4 months in the sun after it came out of my rescue tank along with a bunch more. Then soaked it in bleach water for 2 weeks, rodi for another 2 weeks and let dry another 2 weeks. It is now in my tank and clean/pest free

I still have more sitting outside in a barrel waiting to go through the same cleaning before I do anything with it

You're a way more brave soul for doing that...lol but then I live in a apartment and don't have the space for doing that...

I had some extremely gnarly cyano that was embedded deep within the rock. I let them soak in fresh water and it was still there. So I moved to a bleach solution.

After pulling the rock out, running under fresh water, scrubbing it off with a bristle brush... It came back in the exact same area

What I found was the cyano was coming from within the pores/holes.

I had to soak it in fresh for awhile in order to clear it out

I applaud you guys (seriously) for being able to leave tanks with nothing in them for weeks, and dry rock for months, etc. It would be interesting to know if all this is really needed. My guess is that putting the rock in bleach for a day - and then using chlorine neutralizer (obviously a high concentration) - along with rinsing would take this from a weeks long process to a days process. Just curious why is everyone going to all this trouble?

Well, in most cases I've gone through that process because live rock I purchased either already had unwanted things on it, or I messed something up. Also, i don't really have a whole lot of say as to whether or not I have time the next day to move things along - so if its in bleach today, it's probably sitting in bleach for a few days before I get to it again. [emoji14]

Also, is typically just an orange bucket in the backyard if I'm cleaning or prepping.

I have a tank full of rock set up. This is rock I get for pennies and clean and sell cheap to people along with a rock from my tank to get them started

Or I trade them their nasty rock for my clean and sell them 1 seeded rock from my tank. Or trade them a rock from my tank for a frag.

Not making money at it just gives me something to do and help another reefer get their tank back in shape

So it really doesn’t take any patience doing it. I have about 300 pounds of clean dry rock ready to go

Well I bought new rock for my new tank as I didn't want all that nasty stuff in there. And I didn't want to just throw it away. I have a full basement where my sump is so I just did it down there in a closed Olive bucket.

Man I can’t wait till I build my cabin so I can have a basement.

I’m planning on a 210 gallon or larger in wall in the living room under the stairs to the second floor and back behind the tank will be the light room

Basement will be sump and frag system

Took me 20 years to get my sump into the basement and I had one all along.....lol
