Live Sand in RODI Water

Hi Folks - For my new build, I plan to add caribsea live sand and run the system with just RODI water before mixing in salt in the tank. The process could take 1-2 days between making the water, and getting to the right salinity. Any issues with exposing the live sand to such conditions?
 
Not really any issue I see. The sand needs to be rinsed anyway to get rid of the dust and dead stuff. When salt mix hits water it does create a chemical reaction and with that comes heat. I think it will not effect your bacteria. If in doubt add a bottle of starter bacteria once the salt is mixed.

i've heard its not recommended to rinse live sand?
 
I have heard that too . I only do what I know works for me.
Bacteria live on the surface of the sand and in pores. Rinsing will not wash it off.
Bacteria is hard to kill with plain water. Just ask a doctor.
I would rather not have dust clouds in my tank than lose a few bacteria.
 
I wouldn’t rinse live sand, only the dry stuff. If you are rinsing live sand, at least don’t use tap water. Chlorine might kill some of what you are paying for.
 
Caribsea live sand is just sand that has been sterilized and has had nitrifying bacteria added back to it. Not a lot different than just adding a bottle of Dr Tims/Biospira/etc.
 
we need this tested. I posted a thread the other day in gen forum about things only speculated about in reefing and never measured, this is one. If you'll test the sand initially to prove it even arrives live (cheap bucket of saltwater, dr tims ammonium chloride, sand -nonrinsed- and put in a mesh bag as filter media for a canister filter) you'll know in 24 hours if it arrives live as stated.

don't dose raw ammonia to 2ppm, 1/2 ppm or 1 ppm, any tiny amount that your test kit registers as a change from zero, is plenty for proofing.

don't dose to 2 ppm that's an arbitrary number off someone's bottle bac label it is not the required proof of nitrification for microbiology, and that much ammonia is hard to clear anyway from a place where surface area isn't taking up most of the tank. half a ppm is ideal.

after that test w pictures of the vials etc, then rinse the sand well using tap water, redo the test and lets see if it clears over nite or if it clears in 3 days, that last measure is critical to measure total sterility of the sample vs initial shock of rinse, if any.

if you take time to measure this, you're doing something brs hasn't done, none of the big posters who review things online have bothered to test etc. we're all guessing about pretty basic aspects of tank microbiology

if anyone here takes a sample of tap water out of the tap and has that analyzed on specific agar for mixed bacteria, it will test filthy dirty, ie tap water delivers bac to a sample it doesn't sterilize it. kitchen and bathroom cleaners must be used bc tap water is filthy, its not a cleaning agent alone. we need its effect on sand tested.

if a tap rinse kills the sand sample even out to 3 days, then redo another section of sand only as an ro/di rinse to see if that preserves it.

*i truly dont know if rinsing kills the bac, getting tap anywhere near my lab samples used to contaminate them horribly/bac are alive in tap so for the rest Im guessing/would enjoy seeing an actual test. in the sand rinse thread we dont care if sand bac die or not, thats why tap rinsing hasnt been critical. rinsing a sandbed in tap water and putting back is no more harmful than removing the sand altogether to go bare bottom, lots of people do that nowadays. we think sandbed bac dont matter, whether or not they're killed Id love to see in tests.

I didn’t rinse my sand before and then ended up removing it all and reintroducing it with all freshly rinsed live sand. @lapin and @brandon429 are right! Bacteria can withstand the washing and you will be happy you washed it. For example I can turkey baste sand up and release it 8 inches off the bottom of my tank and it immediately falls clear and settles nicely.. I would never add live sand again without rinsing it!!

can you do this comfortably within your tank?

OP isn't asking about rinsing his live sand. OP is asking about putting live sand in the tank, then running the tank with RODI water for a couple days.

This will kill any bacteria in the sand, due to the osmotic gradient between the bacteria and RODI. In other words, the bacteria will burst.
 
Ive setup a new tank two months ago with 5 bags of Caribsea pinkfiji and didnt rinse it at all. Instructions said not to.
It causes few temporally cloudiness but filter take it over in few hours.
 
What's the point of using live sand to only do what it says not to? Why not just buy dry? Logically if you are going to go against it's directions and risk killing all the marine bacteria why not simply do dry as it's cheaper and you are starting from scratch anyways. Or is am I missing something? I'm relatively new to the marine side of the hobby so I'm honestly JW
 
He’s asking the same question I had with in regards to adding just RODI water to live sand. Then mixing salt after while in the tank. I did some research and the chemical heat produced by the salt mix unless done very slowly will kill any living organisms in the tank from what I researched. I would love to be pet of this research however it’s a pretty penny for what I have spent all of my sand and rock needed for my new built and I am not going to chance it. However if I decide to do a nano tank I may try it then
 
If the bac are insulated in biofilm, no bursting.

this stuff needs to be tested, surely a chem forum will not settle. when I drain my entire reef tank in the air for half an hour in repeated testing, biofilm is insulating those filter bac, as online we can clearly google from the fritz site that bac wont tolerate drying. they leave out the biofilm part, so my drained tank never recycles.

there is always some part left out of the equation, or some stated consequence about an action bacteria can't take but we can find opposing models in thread examples all around

Most of you already have the gear to end the spec its article gold in the very least to have some final say, some bacteria umpiring.

agreed on the scope: does live sand arrive alive

if you soak it in ro di water for 3 days, can it still pass the original test proving it was alive. who doesn't want to know that for sure, surprised its been not looked at for this long.

3 day soak sounds like its really pushing it. *tetra bottle bac brand for instance seeds for both fresh and marine tanks, out of the same bottle*

whatever that mechanism is, is why i was reserving judge on the sand soak until the test is ran.

how are the bac that seed for marine/salty not dying if they're mixed with ones for freshwater, or, maybe one strain does both without osmotic issues, but its right there in one bottle.

fresh vs salt isn't as extreme as its being painted, or bathroom cleaner could just be salty tap water. for every claimed limitation for bacteria, an opposing proof exists
