both of the posted sands are what I use
trick of the millennium
pre rinse the hound out of those. use tap if you want, doesn't matter, rinse it so hard that its cloudless, then you'll have cloudless sand until fish poop compiles in it, needing a touch up cleaning.
pre removing silt is great, its not helpful. early diatoms like high fraction Si feed.
the floc additive they supply, not needed, just rinse out floc.
rinsing doesn't harm bacteria, or surgeons wouldn't scrub in till they bleed and still carry a risk of contamination. we aren't rinsing that hard comparatively
pre rinsing is so awesome, we made an eight page thread collecting all the benefits.
we take the rinsing part a step further than the surgeons analogy, we run it on aged systems to clean back out the fish waste, skipping the recycle. rinse rinse rinse.
