Look at how the numbers grow!

Face of this hobby is changing with an accelerating pace and there’s nothing one can do about it. Word FOWLR will be obsolete soon, everybody wants a reef, by minimum mixed one, but preferably SPS dominant. During my recent visit to one of LFS I have noticed that #1 tank in popularity is Fluval EVO 13.5. There’s nothing wrong about it, but running tank of this size as your first one can be quite challenging. Can I keep Tang in my 40 gal? Is my tank ready for Clownfish now? My kids are getting impatient. The only thing, which worries me here is number of fish, invertebrate and coral mortality in those new systems. Sure we are all learning, but there are articles, books, videos full of information about reefing and we don’t have to learn new hobby hard way
The live sales are just as bad. Just think how many corals are sold each week on here thru live sales and how many don't make it a year. If you told me 50% don't survive a year I wouldn't be shocked. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people post they didn't really want or didn't know what kind of coral it was but they couldn't pass up the $1 or $5 price tag.
