Per the thread title I'm looking for a really quiet return pump for my sump. Currently I'm running a Jebao DCT4000 at 1/10 power and it makes a pretty decent whine. I'm using vinyl hose for the return so there's no vibration at least. The only other sound is from the corner overflow which I dont see any way to eliminate.

I have a Vectra L2 and it is virtually silent. I know they are a bit spendy compared to your current pump although I think you could get away with a S2 or M2 which would drive the cost down considerably.

Does it have to be a DC pump? I really like the Sicce pumps. Using the syncra 4.0 on my 75 and its super quiet
The 4.0 was great for me (super quiet) , but when my tank sprung a leak and i drilled the new one for my eshopps L over flow I didn't get enough flow for my bean animal without almost closing the primary. Might be how i set it up or my plumbing.

Vectra's are about as quiet as they come for a middle of the road priced pump.
RD3's are very quiet, but they are on the high side side price wise.

Take a look at the Abyzz range, but the very expensive but you get a silent powerful pump with a 10 year warranty

I have owned Tunze, Eheim, Vectra and Royal Exclusiv. All of them are reasonably quiet but the only one I can say is truly silent is the Royal Exclusiv RD3. The best return pump I have ever had by far. It is worth every dollar (or euro in my case) it costs.

I always wanted to try one of those but they make royal exclusiv seem affordable. Never thought I would say that. This is based on research years ago tho.

I had a Vectra M1 operating for a certain time and was almost silent. After a cleaning it began making a whirring sound that I couldn't eliminate even after mounting and dismounting it. That whirring was not too bad but my wife didn't like it at all, and she's the one taking naps besides the tank (I could have a siesta during a bombing).

I use a DCT 4000 at about 50% and it is absolutely silent. If you want to stay cheap try another jebao. If your going to spend money go a reef octopus.

+1

I know it doesn’t effect the whine, but as a side note on vibration reduction I prefer to use silicone hose instead vinyl. You can find silicone hose by the foot at BRS.
