Losing fish

I have had velvet kill that quick and show next to nothing on the body of the fish. It is a parasite and you will still need to take your tank fallow.

Best thing to do is get a 10 gallon quarantine tank also for your future fish. I have learned the hard way too that it is best to be safe rather than sorry.

I currently have a black clownfish in my 10g QT. I set it up about 5 days ago and he's been in there for 3 days so far, I'll just have to extend the initial 30 to 50 now =(

I get the stress part but fail to see using tap water. The article doesn't touch on that. Or maybe your assuming the tap water is dirty?
you're welcome. What i mean is that some places have dirty tap water (like suffolk county, which i unfortunately live in, but i have a water filter on the kitchen sink) I think Tampa bay has a decent water quality from the tap.

Depends on where he lives. I use tap water, and my fish hasnt died, ive had her since december.
So it depends on the quality of water
even so, it can cause issues that can especially among more sensitive fish. People can smoke around their tank, its not a great idea but they still can.

This was the last picture I took of him. Sometime the night before his untimely passing

He has white patches on him.. possibly brook. Certainly does not look healthy.

Fallow the tank and QT new fish. If you are buying clowns from that same store, I would treat them for brook in QT and probably copper too (not both at once) just because that clown is very suspect and the fish store probably shares water among them.

There is a sticky on QT protocol as far as medications and treatments go.

Yeah, same store, highly recommended among aquarists here. I’ll research into treating for it. I really want to try to stay away from medicating every new fish if possible.

Here’s my guy in my QT from yesterday

Here’s the tank. During the fallow period, should I supp my cuc with any food?

It wouldn’t hurt to put a few pellets in every day, but only put in as much as they would individually eat, as you don’t want to over feed and cause a problem. There’s plenty of other things in there that will provide the cuc with nutrition.

That picture pretty much confirms brooklynella to me. Many things can cause excess mucous in a fish, but this much seems characteristic of brook, or a parasite of similar nature.

Just an FYI for fallowing, you may want to exceed the 45 days, and possibly even go up to 76 days to cover all bases regarding parasites (different parasites have different life cycles, need different-length fallow periods). Totally up to your preference, though.

Ok, relieved to hear that and that it’s not still a mystery. As difficult as it will be, I’ll go 80 days in QT. If I lose another fish my fiancé will cut me off

Tank has to not have fish for 80 days.
Typical qt protocol only goes about 45 days (30 days copper and about 2 weeks of praziquantel), so you can pick up fish to qt earlier in the fallow as long as they don’t go in until the fallow is over.

Gotcha. Yeah I have a clown in qt now. Is it doable to qt two fish at the same time? I’d think best not to.

As long as the fish are compatible in small spaces and you can keep up with the water quality it will be fine. Make sure both are medicated for the same time.
Great advice! I have some copper power and metroplex coming in a couple of days. Going to follow humble fish's qt method. I'll get another clown before starting that!
