Mag and Gig Anemone ID help

Day 6 of Cipro has been successful so far. The Gigs have been inflated more consistently and they presented some balling behavior late at night and opens up during the day.

The verdict on the Mag/BTA identification is still ongoing... It is super weird because during lights out, the tentacles are longer and more uniform whereas as soon as the light starts to turn on and ramp up for the day, the tentacles appear to bubble up.While there are some tentacles are bulbous at the tip, most look like they bulb up with a tip at the end.

A LFS picture of a different anemone Mag they have in the shop. Notice how the tentacle's bulbs are different. Mine are bulbous with a tip forming versus this LFS anemone are bulbous through to the tip.

I'd venture to say you've got a BTA based on the tentacle tips being rather pear/spade shaped and the pedal column being somewhat "velvetty" and textured (I've only seen mags with smooth, firm pedal column). My BTAs change tentacle shape from long and slender to bulbs several times per day.

It's a gorgeous anemone nonetheless!

See how the anemone is wavy like it has a skirt. It’s a mag. 420% Give it time to adjust to treatment then your main tank. It will expand when fully acclimated. May take months.

One more observation just now.... it was really hard to take a picture so here is a crude drawing of the mouth area, its a bit crude hahaha. I noticed what seemed like two lightning bolt patterns coming from the mouth.

Why is it so hard to ID anemones....

For what its worth I boughtthis Nem from a LFS that my buddy recently told me is not as honest and is all about pushing product out. So I bought it with high hopes that they did in fact sell me a Mag...

Ritteri anemone have a lot of tentacles. I mean a lot. Which this one has. Show me a bta that has a lot of tentacles like this.

I was sold a lemon tree a decade ago. Every year I get a couple dozen “lemons” from it .

There’s a lot more than looking at leaves or tentacles that go into ID.

You not gonna like my opinion, but gh0st, I would also push my chips in that yours is BTA also. I know you don’t like hearing this, just be aware it MIGHT be, it might walk around if it gets different care, high flow vs low flow, higher light vs lower light, crevice for foot vs up high on flat rock. I hope you have what you want, but could be a BTA. Just my opinion, I’m fine being wrong, but my guess is BTA.

To me all yours look like mags. The one in BB tank looked like it COULD be a BTA, the first pic you posted looked not in focus. Above pics, if same BB nem with swollen foot is the same, I eat crow. Looks like mag.

My DT is not enormous so I am trying to be super picky with my selection.

I have been holding off on a definitive BTA ID because of the petaling of the foot, color pattern, number of tentacles and the LFS's ID.

But seems like the two qhite lines coming out of the mouth is strictly a BTA feature and not a Mag? Unless there are always exceptions...

I hope this thread is informative for others looking for a mag...

OrionN commented on your post. I been following this doctor for many years. He been working with gigs and mags and clams since the beginning when these anemone was super rare. I trust his option he knows his stuff and been doing this for mags, gigs, and clams for over 20+ years. Good luck and it was fun going back and forth with you Taylor.

That looks like a mag to me. I have seen them bubble up like that when they are acclimating..

@Variant Based on the actinic blue image that I commented on, with all the bubbly tentacles, it looked like a BTA. But the new daylight shots, I still think its a mag. My mags tips have gone pointed instead of round ball before, but I have never seen them bubble up like that. I also know that in a weeks time it's condition can change and your next pic might look very different.

@gh0st I agree that all of the ones you posted are mags. Taylor has a lot of knowledge and was right there with Minh all these years. He knows his stuff.
