Unplugged mine this morning and took it to Petsmart with that email printed out. The manager just told me to go pick any other heater off the shelf that was the same wattage. No questions asked.
There is a thread going on RC about this too. I should take my smaller one in and get something new I wish I was able to return mine before it broke my sump
Woke up yesturday morning and was going to feed the fish. Got close to the tank and noticed fish were acting kinda funny. Noticed temp was 65 deg. Got alittle closer to the tank and the hair on my arm was standing up from the static electricity. Alarms went off in my head telling me that something was wrong. I grabbed my volt meter and checked the tank. 36.5 volts running through my tank..... Started unplugging things and checking volts as I went. Unplugged the heater first since the temp was low. Eliminated 26 volts right off the bat. Unplugged one of the power heads. Another 5.5 volts gone. Finally got to the return pump and found the remaining 5 volts. I had just checked the tank a week before because I read someones post about there electrical problem and it reminded me to check mine again. It read zero. I had 2 maxi jet 1200s and a heater go out in a week. And have nothing to replace them untill tomorrow eccept a HOB filter with a heater built into it. Ive got the temp back up and am using my other maxi jet as a return instead of a power head. Is this a common problem with maxi jets?
Any guesses on what kind of heater I was using???? Thanks for the post!!! I was just going to guy another heater tomorrow when I get off work. Guess i'll go home and dig the stealth out of the garbage first:bigsmile:
Here is a pic of the one that blew in my tank. It must have gotten some water inside the heating element, built up steam, and shot the heating element across the sump.
I have two 250w Stealth Pro Heaters that are less than a year old. I use one as a spare in case my other goes out. The spare it what I use to heat my water change reservoir. That heater went out last week and I sent an email to Marineland. They said it could be 2 months before they got new stock in but are sending me a Visi-Therm to use during the meantime. I then found out about PetSmart's communication of the recall. I sent their communication to to Foster and Smith Aquatics to see if they would honor the recall as well. Haven't heard back yet.
I'm thinking of this heater to use instead - anyone use this heater? Feedback?
I'm trying to get a new thread started for recall and safety issues for all dry goods started. I posted in the recomendations section at the beginnig of the forum section. If you think this would be a good idea please put your comments there. I believe it would help keep our live stock as well as our selves safer, and would keep some from burning thier house down if a manufacturer were to have a safety recall.
Great idea firefighered. Would be nice to have a one stop shop for recalls. Maybe we could even get stickys for the newest ones, and then put them back to normal ones its "old"
wow, mine blew up around christmas in the middle of the night. luckily everything survived and i was at the lfs when the doors opened to get a new heater as i didnt have any spares. now i keep an extra.
