Maxspect Gyre reviews

I have a 130, just question the durability of these things as I have had to have a few things replaced.

It works well though!

another reason to go horizontal is to get better surface disruption. Remember, flow is also to help gas exchange and helps stabilize pH.

Been running my 130 since March. Love it!! 2" below waters surface horizontal on slow pulse mode at 40% gives excellent surface waves, pushing off the opposite end of the tank for full top to bottom flow. My SPS are very happy!! [emoji7]

Should I put it close to the top and straight across or a little down and pointed up

Each tank is probably different.
I have mine about 2 inches below the water surface. I cage is pointing a little up and the other one a little more down. This way you break up the surface and the flow goes all the way across the other side. At the same time your rockwork gets some flow also and keeps them clean.
Just move them to your liking. I would suggest to try it out at the highest speed settings and see the result if you create a sandstorm or not :)

I agree with maxreefer. I'd start with them pointing forward about 2 inches below the surface and start there. See how you like the flow. Then move 1 cage pointing down a bit and see how it goes.

I know I messed around with placement of my gyre a ton of times before I found a good position. Also I'd start it up high as well and if you're getting a sandstorm slow it down till it stops

My only issue is my LPS get upset when it's horizontal. I put it vertical and they seem happy. I also have pretty good flow. My rock work is just a little difficult for it to flow with it being horizontal.

I have a 130 running vertically on a 60 cube acro tank. I run it at 100% on alternating gyre mode along with a tunze 6095 and 6045 and love it. It moved my sandbed a little when I first put it on line, but now everything has settled, and I love it! Awesome pump, and aesthetically its hardly noticeable. If it lasts half as long as my tunze pumps, its a definite witnner!

I have a 130 in a barebottom frag tank, and a 150 in 90g with a shallow sand bed. They both work great, but if I turn the 150 up too much, it redistributes my sand bed. The 130 I can run on full blast when needed. Aesthetics are great. I just wish I didn't have a sand bed now, lol
Same with me.....my sand has been pushed around when I have it set too high.

I'm glad at least some folks have let go of the "motor in the tank" phobia. ;) Other interesting factoids just being discovered among the switchers too. :) :)

You'd probably be better served by a more adjustable pump like a Tunze if improving your rock layout is out of the question. Any pump needs room to work and will be hampered in close-quarters. Engineering some open space at the top of the tank helps a LOT.

BTW, vertical placement is going to creat a gyre that has the effect of sinking food and detritus in the center of the tank. Depending on your tank/situation this might be fine, but for most it's very important to use all available flow to keep food and detritus suspended. Horizontal placement is compatible with this goal. :)

I just added a XF-150 to my RedSea Reefer 350, and after a full day, all the sand has blown over to one side of the aquarium. I've tried a few different settings and keep getting different version of all the sand gathered into one pile. Do I need to turn it down, or should I be pointing it in a different direction? Perhaps the sand will settle down once the tank matures a bit? This is a brand new tank with nothing but water, sand, and rock so far. Anybody else run into this?

Once you have your rock in place - which should ideally be both low in the tank and open in structure...

Turn your pump down in small increments once a day, or once every time you redo the sand until you still see some small sand grains occasionally tumbling, but no more re-landscaping. :D You do want the pump to keep things moving across the sand bed quite well. I do think the sand will clump more as the bacterial colonies among it grow too.

Remember that there's nothing wrong with having some headroom available to turn your pump up later, as someday your tank will (hopefully!) be full of big coral colonies and they obstruct flow for a living. ;) But really, they do!

Purchased one of the first units during the week they were made available. Loved it then and love it still. Coralvues service, while it seems a bit impersonal, is very efficient and effective.

I noticed the insulation around the power cord was cracked near the motor. I had a new motor in hand in about 3 days. Pretty awesome.

Cleaning is very quick and easy for me at this point. Love it!

Bought two earlier this year and very disappointed. Two rotors have become separated from their end caps within three months .There was no damage to the rotors themselves and nothing had got caught in them the separate end piece had just become detached. Also, when disconnecting one of the pumps from the controller the plastic screw on cap disintegrated ( it hasn't been subject to heat, or over tightening, it just fell apart!) for such an expensive piece of kit I think that there are some quality issues. For me the best thing about them is the packaging!

I had 2-150's in a 75, alternating via apex.
Awesome pumps, but on level1 or level2 they stop after they get "dirty" which is about a week. Pretty ticked about that one but luckily things didn't get mad at level3.

All in all they're great, but until they work out the low-level stop, I would wait for the 2nd gen or a generation that has integration with a more advanced controller.
