Maxspect Gyre vs. Vortechs

So setting up my dream tank. 180g 6ftx2x2.

I have 2 mp40 now. Wondering if I should switch to the new gyre instead. What do you guys think?

My next build is going to be a 175g penisula and I'm planning to try the gyre to see if it'll do the job alone. On my last 175 I used the two MP40s.

It's going to highly depend on your rock work. I could run my entire 150g on just the gyre but the flow just doesn't hit some of my corals in the center of the tank. I can't just turn it up higher or some corals will get blasted to death. Keep the MP40's around to supplement.

The Gyre looks really nice! Wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

I'd run the gyre and 1 or 2 mp40s. I'm running a gyre and mp10 on my 70 gallon.

The Gyre looks like it does a good job but I wouldnt run a tank that large all by itself. Id Keep an MP40 in there along with it.

Well on the rock work, I haven't got to set it up yet. I'm literally just starting. Have the tank and stand but having to do all the plumbing. Switching from my 90g where I have 2 mp40. So was going to put them on the 180. But I saw the gyre so trying to figure out whether it would be better

The Gyre on my 4' 120 moves the entire water column at 40%. I have it positioned at one end running on pulse mode during the day.

I do have an MP-10 centered on the back wall, mostly because I have the Ecotech battery backup for power outages.

I replaced two Jebao RW-15s with the Gyre last week and I am thrilled with it so far.

I run an MP40 on one side and a gyre on the other on a 4 foot tank. I wouldn't get rid of the MP40. The gyre alone doesn't provide random flow for SPS, but together with the MP40 it creates a lot of variation in flow from both. Somebody suggested running two gyres, each one in pulse mode opposite to each other to make random flow, but that's a big investment. For the time being, I'm keeping my MP40.

Jake Adams had a great piece on Reef Builders this week that debunked the idea of "Random Chaotic Flow" in favor of the kinds of mass water movement that the Gyre provides.

Since one can easily claim both are overpriced, I think the Vortech inflated price tag is much more justifiable. I think the hype about the Gyre is simply because its different. Stick with the MP40's.

I can't run the gyre higher than 30%. That being said I still run the mp40's since I have them and put the gyre on the back wall vertically, alternating flow every 5 min.

Yes I read this. Kinda made me more in tune with buying the Gyre.

The gyre doesn't have a night mode yet. Unless you want to manually turn them up and down daily, you might want to keep the vortech for night time flow and put the riptide on a timer.
