Well mine hid well too but when he was barely alive he was just laying on the sand in the corner. They say if you can't find them that is a good sign but if they are having health problems they will be easy to find in plain view at the bottom of the tank...good luck

I have a lemon peel mimic tang. He was definitely bullying him a bit. Was boxing him out like he was going for a rebound
My suspicion is that he has made attempts to come out but the tang scared him back into the sand. Are you able to watch your tank when the lights come on to see if he tries to come out?

My tang did this to my melanurus also.

That is it. Sand sifting wrasses will appear to die. If he is hiding he's OK, ultimately you may have to make a choice on who you are going to keep if you have another fish that's spooking the Melanarus. They seem to last about a month without regular appearances then all bets are off . Mine will disappear for about a week at a time and then suddenly reappear as if nothing's happened, I'm used to it now.

Also if you can watch your tank at lights out or near about , you may see him attempting to come out. I know the corner where mine will burrow and sleep, so if necessary, I'll gently prod to see if he's around.

Yea, I'm usually up with the kids when the lights start to come on. The tang sleeps somewhere in the rockwork so I don't see him out and about for a bit. I've hung out when the lights go off and pop down stairs before bed every now and then to see if he's made an appearance. Thinking of setting up a camera to watch the tank over night and review the video
