Meredith's 180 In-wall happy place

Have you thought on how you will cover the drywall raw edges around the front of the tank ?

I'm going to use foil backed tape, like when installing new windows and doors. I have a roll left over when I installed a replacment sliding patio door. That will seal great, then I'll glue on a strip of molding all the way around.

Actually yeah. I wasn't going to say how because I feel it's pretty stupid, but we used white duct tape. lol You know the saying, "if you can't duck it....." My husband's idea and it looks pretty good on the viewing side. Blends nicely with the trim that I still need to finish off. I've been busy trying to fill the tank and of course fixing the plumbing.

I don't know how long duct tape will last ?

It dry's out pretty fast then wrinkles & shrinks, so it won't last very long, especially around moisture and salt.
Last winter the glass seperated from the wood jams on our 30 yr old deck door, so I temporarly used duct tape to hold it together
until spring. It lasted three months. That's why I wouldn't use it for sealing.

The door & window foil tape is made to keep moisture out, so you may want to think about using it instead. It is also sticky yet thin enough to be able to cut into corners vey well.

I told my husband. He's resistant because he says "it will look weird" but I think I'll be able to change it out without him noticing. ;) thanks for the tip!

Did you think of using some kind of molding to fill the gap? Perhaps some type of crown molding. Not too large. Small to medium. It can be GLUED to the inside of the opening. Hammers and glass doesn't mix well. Lol

I used outside corner molding or you could use just flat stock and use adheisive to glue it down on the exposed drywall.

I have moulding around the outside of the tank (viewing side) I think we might be a bit confused. (or maybe it's just me lol) This is what the frame around the tank looks like. I'm standing with the camera up against the glass looking down on the edge of the wall and moulding. You can see: glass, drywall covered with white duct tape, then moulding.

I can see how I would need to remove the duct tape and put down the window tape like you suggested. I don't know what the other stuff would be for though.

I still have to fill in the corners where the moulding meets each other. That was what I meant when I said I needed to finish it off.

We actually completely glued the moulding we have down. So we were thinking the same thing there. I don't have a gap though.... but I"m probably still confused from the last post.

427HISS and myself is thinking is to make a picture frame out of crown molding to fit inside the opening. That picture frame would then be glued to the sides of the opening to fill the gap.

427HISS correct me if I'm wrong.

So the curved corner pieces on that link would go on the inside of what I already have right? That would look pretty good, but I wish ya'll would have had this idea before I did all the moulding and the hole in the wall. That way I could have made the hole a bit bigger so the extra inside piece didn't cover the tank at all. Hmmm... I'll have to go buy a piece of that so I can see how much it would block and how it would look in place.

Quick update: I've spent the last several days filling this tank up and am finally almost done!!

I got the bulkhead replaced last night and the new plumbing installed. Apparently there are different types of bulkheads out there with slightly different threads. The bulkhead I bought at the store is a slightly different type than the one that came with the tank and now the threads won't match up with the 1 1/4 in pvc, so I had to go the other way with it and use 1 inch pvc for that drain. I don't anticipate this being a problem though. You can see the small difference in the drain pipe on the right than the one on the left.

I've also had my gyre installed for the last few days. It's pretty neat and easy to install. I dont really understand what all the icons on the controller mean or do when lit up, but it's neat! I used the instructions to get it to do the wave action and it really pushes the water from one end of the tank to the other. I'm pretty impressed with it. Small note though, about 20 minutes after hooking it up in the tank and running it started making a squeaking sound. I left the house for a few hours and when I came back it had stopped, so maybe it was just breaking in. I'll be moving it once I have the tank running tonight. I had it there just to keep the water moving while I fill it.

Right!!! Oh boy. I think I can I think I can I think I can. I'm going to distract myself by building the mixing station and moving the RODI unit. Oh and I'll also be making new screen tops for this tank! I ordered the clear mesh from BRS this time around.

The gyre might be pulling sand into the impeller. I have mine 3 inches down from the top. You might want to start using the gyre near the top and move it down as needed
