What do you think?

Here is my perspective:
I moved away from MH a year ago or so. Mostly because I didn't like the color of the bulbs I was running, and I could get a T5 fixture for a bit more $$ instead of replacing brand new MH bulbs. Plus, the draw of being able to change color by replacing a $20 bulb versus an $80 bulb was big for me. I was getting phenomenal growth from MH, but coupled with the VHO bulbs I was running, the setup was a massive power hog, running over 900w daily. So again I saw the attraction of T5s. My fixture currently runs 4x54w for 10 hours and 4x85w for 4 hours. Compare that to the 500w I was running for 6 hours (MH) and the 440w I was running for 12 hours (VHO), and you can see where I'd be more than happy to cut my lighting in half at least, and probably more like two thirds.

I sold my MH with relative ease. They weren't the best of the best, but they were nice fixtures/ballasts/bulbs. I had several offers quickly and didn't have any trouble selling them locally.

Fast forward to today: I'm now moving away from T5s, and going to LEDs. I've beaten the power issues, and now I want to nip the bulb replacements as well. Thirteen bulbs every fourteen months or so adds up ($260ish). So I can justify the payoff costs pretty quickly (less than four years pretty easily), and I might even be able to cut some more power usage out as well.

So I've been selling some old MH stuff I've had laying around, and cannot "give" the stuff away. Perhaps the economy is playing a part, but I'm more inclined to think that metal halides are just a fading technology. People aren't interested in big electric bills coupled with high cost bulb replacements any more. LEDs are coming. I'll be the first to admit that I thought I'd stick with T5s for quite some time. I always scoffed at the LEDers - thinking they'd jumped too soon, invested too much. But they are showing growth, giving great power savings, and are cutting costs in our hobby.

Anyways - I know there are a lot of people still running MH, and they will be around for years to come most likely. To me, though, the giant has fallen and LEDs/T5s are the replacements, and T5 will likely follow suit in the next five years or so.

Rant over..... :P

I don't know that the colors that a 400 watt Radium bulb produces out of SPS could be produced with anything else....... Reason enough for me to keep the MH, at least on that tank.

I don't think it'll fade, at least no faster than VHO. You would have thought VHO would be gone due to the advent of T5, but it seems super actinic diehards alone keep it alive. Halides are even harder to kill due to their horticulture uses and broader spectrum applications.

i'm still running halides here 2x 250w 14k phoenixs but also T5 and LED supplement. i LOVE the 3 together! i finally got the color and growth i've been trying to get in the hobby.

So I guess maybe it is more of a "I have them and like them, so I'm sticking with it" maybe?

What about the newcomers? How likely do you think they would be to use MH vs T5 vs LED? I'm sure it depends on their knowledge, but does MH still have the appeal of T5 or LEDs?

i actually had a 48" nova extreme pro T5 setup before i got my halides. eventually i'm going to go over to led's but until prices of the led fixtures comes down to T5 fixture prices i'm gonna stick with what i'm running with right now.

I am still very new to this hobby and I've started with T5s. Although my T5s were not sufficient for the size of my tank and the fact of spending over $200 every 10 months was justification enough for me to make the leap to LEDs. I can't give a fair evaluation on MH because I've never had them but only what I've read. I don't run a chiller so the MH option was out of the question. But it seems for the best of both worlds, combo MH and LED or T5 and LED are currently superior in growth and color. From what I've read
Don't get me wrong, I love my LEDs and it's staying that way for a very long time.....

You can keep your LEDs and I'll stick to what works; the 20k radium hasn't let me down yet..To me MH's are well worth the extra energy cost and IMO if the extra cost is really that big of a deal then perhaps this hobby isn't for you.....LEDs are cool for supplemental pop though thats for sure.

I'm sure it is possible to be in this hobby and be economically efficient. Aren't we all happier when we get to buy something we need on sale rather than at regular price???

I'd rather spend money on new corals every month with the savings and have phenomenal colors than spend the money on electricity and have phenomenal colors on the corals I already own.

;)
That's just the thing; I have yet to see an LED equipped, SPS dominated tank, where the colors popped like they do under MH. Sure when they turn on just the blues the colors are there, but under the full spectrum LEDs the SPS look blah to me. This is of course just my opinion after viewing many LED tanks in person. Even Robert @ neptunes, who is HUGE LED proponent, still keeps his SPS for sale under the MHs to help keep their color....And he has more LEDs in his store than any place I've seen. If LEDs were so great and provided sustainable color in SPS then I'm sure he of all people would be using them....

One problem with LEDs, and Troylee discovered it, is that when a frag moves from LED to MH or T5, the color changes drastically. That is probably the main reason he doesn't sell sticks under LEDs - but that is just a guess at best.

It seems everyone around me (locally) is moving to LEDs, including me. I was fully impressed with a few tanks I have seen lately. I look forward to moving to LEDs, too. I enjoy the DIY aspect of this hobby, so it will help keep me motivated for a while.

And to just bring up another point what do you do when the LEDs start to lose their intensity? I know most manufacturers have crazy claims of a zillion+ hours of life but obv thats not happening. My friend runs all LED reefbrite bars and his LEDs have become noticeably weaker in intensity to the eye and the corals seem to depict the same, and he has only had them for a little over a year now...

I have just bought an apogee mq 200, so I'll be able to monitor them pretty closely.

When they go dim, I'll replace them with new ones. No biggie there. Just a bit of soldering to do. I'll have plenty of extras left over to do that as well.

Tons of lemmings in this hobby man; LEDs are whats hot right now so its no surprise that there are a ton of reefers giving them ago. I've talked to several people who regret going to LEDs immensely, and their corals regretted it as well lol.

I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the fact that the colors would end up going brown on him in the time that they sit in the store.

Yep - me too.

A key that is often overlooked is overpowering the coral with LEDs. I think it is a lot easier to do than everyone thinks. Once you light shock them, you make them susceptible to a lot of problems. With the PAR meter, I hope to replicate my T5 setup as close as possible (even less starting out). This will give me a good indication on growth.

Although I don't think I'm a lemming, I've been waiting for a couple years to jump on the bandwagon. I think with what I plan to do, I can have success. Only time will tell, though.
