So I took my ocean wonder frag racks out to clean and notice 2 of 3 had exposed magnets corroding. I am wondering what method other then water changes I can use to remove the medals that have been leeching into my tank?

Yeah, that's not going to work too well, probably. I wedge a piece of Poly-Filter under the outflow gizmo of a HOB filter. Maybe just clip a piece to an algae clip and stick it in a high flow area of your tank.

Polyfilters by Poly Bio Marine remove metals, and are very different than filter floss.

Other metal removing methods include Cuprisorb by Seachem and Detox by Triton.

Skimming and GAC will also help.

The Two Little Fishies product above also sounds promising.

Actually trying the metasorb now for my aluminum "problem" as its one of the metals they state that the product can remove. It's a lot simpler than detox being its a bagged resin and will not require a carbon removal process. Very small bag in high flow area. Been in since Friday. Going to remove it later this week.

I keep Poly-Filter and Cuprisorb in my tank 24/7 to help with any bad rocks that might come along or foods. I have seen elevated aluminum, copper, and zinc from time to time, all seem to be pretty well soaked up by the 2. Tried detox too at some point, not too worthwhile if it's being leached vs a one-time exposure. (but I would guess it might rid something the other 2 don't)

I wouldn't worry about it as magnets are ferrous metal which is iron and won't do anything, it may even be good. Go out to dinner and order a nice bottle of Merlot.
Many people, OK all the people will disagree with me and that's fine because I have a lot of Merlot.

No Paul your right about it not being a problem. If you need to remove any other more harmful metals I use the poly pad.

agreed w P

I just purposely put rusting metal in my tiny reef to show another poster that the metal they dropped in an inaccessible spot wont hurt

what a wierd and fun experiment its been, no harm to micro benthic creatures or any corals

My test amplifies the typical one in that it's only one gallon of total water, all internal natural filtration no skimmers or absorbers of any kind, a concentration test. Other systems had carbon and massive dilutions comparatively
it's a little more corroded now havent updated this week I'm in mountains vaca

Copper and clorine are deadly. They are found in most water sources. If you were to have a copper pipe corrode in your tank then it is time to panic.

No matter what Paul says cause he got the wine :D

Ppl freak out over a bad magnet and yes it ain't good but it won't harm anything.
Had the same happen with one of these Chinese frag racks and I should know better, it was in my sump for 7 months and there was no magnet left any more, my corals eat it I guess cause they were doing so well!

Dh35 I see what you mean about ro di and pre filtering

This rust is unavailable due to its ionic form and the items we pre filter w ro di are a range of compounds minerals and metals not in this stage

Surely there are some metal combinations that would be dangerous. Raw sodium metal for one heh

A formerly clean metal getting rusted and knurled and corroded only seems like it should pollute something as delicate but it's among weird things one can put in a reef like items from the alcohol cabinet, driveway de icer and medical sterilizing agents

I once collected a bunch of shrimp and crabs from the Long Island Sound and along with them, I collected a large 'rock" weighing maybe five lbs. I put it all in my garage in a 2 gallon bucket and forgot about it for the winter. In the spring, I took it out and noticed the "rock" was a very rusted pulley from probably an old ship. There was maybe an inch of rust on the bottom of the bucket. This pulley completely fell apart when I took it out. But they were the healthiest looking shrimp, crabs and amphipods I have ever seen. Iron and especially rust is stupid to worry about, especially if you have a quantity of good wine. I put nails in my tank and may add a cannonball if I could find one. If you need something to worry about, worry about world hunger, global warming (or cooling) the price of cranberries or the decline of Supermodels, but forget about iron. It is just silly.

Ok Paul, don't get mad now if I ask you a very important question........ not about Supermodels or Wine and Cannonballs even less about this hobby...........

What about Ironman........... should we worry about him? Now that we know Iron isn't that bad at all.

Would you care for some cheese to go with your wine!
In my opinion what's "stupid" or "silly" is someone who is not perhaps as educated as others in this particular subject, then coming on a respected forum and asking a question and getting bashed for asking it.
Thank you to all who responded. I think I have my answer so mods please close this thread.

Actually, we do not close threads unless there's some problem because others may have follow up discussions. :)
