I have a midas blenny I got 2 weeks ago from aquarium store it didn't eat for 2 days then started eating a little like maybe 2 pieces of mysys sometimes 4 but other fish are so fast it's hard for him to get some. He hides most of the time but swims every now and the as long as no one is near the aquarium. Now he always hides same place just tried to feed and no luck even used baster to put it right in front of him. Also breathing kinda hard. I already tried adding garlic to food but still nothing.

do you have any pictures of the little guy to help us diagnose what may be wrong? #WelcometoR2R

Welcome home, you will love it here!

Tell us more about your tank — size, how long it’s been set-up, tankmates, other symptoms, water parameters?

Can't really get any pictures all I can see is his head he looks healthy other then the hiding and breathing a little heavy not skinny yet. Dosen't have any spots on him. He still is mostly pink and purple with a little yellow on his tail.

Water
Salinity 1.024
Amonona 0
Nitrate 0
Nitrite 0
Ph 8.23
Phosphate 0

How did you cycle the tank? 10 fish over three months is a bit fast. I also find it odd that you have no nitrate with 10 fish.

I used read sea reef mature with dry rock
I tested the water last Friday and also took a sample to the aquarium store and they got the same results

My Tailspot took a little tlc with learning to eat.

Did you QT any of these fish?

Welcome to R2R!!!

No had some trouble with the sailfin and yellow tang fighting sailfin won and yellow tang had some marks on his head but getting better with Vitamins in food and dosing tank.
They get along perfect now but sailfin definitely picks on midas blenny.

Looked at midas blenny this morning still laying in same spot. Now see a few white spots on his skin

Can you post pics?

There are several things that white spots could be, a pic may help narrow it down.

Just tested again

I learned something the other day. The API test kit for nitrate goes bad. As I understand, if you don’t shake the liquid additive every few days, the components separate and some hardens on the bottom. After that, you will forever get readings of either 0 or something very high. I’ve been reading 0 for months and couldn’t figure out how considering the biolode in my tank. I went out and bought a Salifert kit and found my nitrate to be about 8.... not 0. I recommend you ditch the API kits. They have a reputation for being incredibly inaccurate. My LFS uses them too. Get better kits.

As for the Blenny... I have a Tailspot Blenny and I don’t see him too much. He zooms out occasionally and when he does I can see he’s fat and happy. My Watchman Goby is the same. Haven’t seen him in weeks. But he and his shrimp are happy as can be. I do agree that you have likely added too much too fast. That just means you will have to be diligent about testing and water changes. Good luck!

a picture would be extremely helpful. white spots could be ich, velvet, flukes, bacterial infections....there are literally to many things it could be.....

Thanks about the API test kit I also have a red sea one I will start using it. I also do a lot of water changes and change the filter socks out every day as well have a skimmer almost double recommended of the size of my tank.
I constantly work on the aquarium to keep it perfect. Have invested about 6k in this 100 gallon aquarium. All the other fish are doing great. Also have around 20 corals in it doing great too.

I did also take a water sample to the aquarium store and there test results were the same . They also use API test kits

Yea... my lfs got the same results which only served to build my confidence. But like I said, my tank has got tons of frags in it and although my fish load is low, I feed more than I should, more often than I should. I knew my nitrates had to be higher than my API kits were showing. One of That LFS uses whatever is cheapest, quickest, and most convenient and they have chosen to go that route (API) at the sake of accuracy. That particular LFS is having HUGE problems with their saltwater section and their fish carry all kinds of diseases. I quit buying from them. The LFS that told me about the API kit is smaller and has a beautiful collection of coral frags in beautiful healthy tanks. The only reason I go to the other is because have very much more in the way of dry goods. In addition to my experience, there are many here that will tell you that the usefulness of the API tests are limited at best and misleading at worse. I won’t go back to API. I now have salifert for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, and magnesium. I use Hanna checkers for dkh, calcium and phosphate.
