I have always wanted a Saltwater tank...

The truth of the matter is that I miss the ocean every time I have to get back on a plane to come back home to Minnesota. So my though after being into Freshwater Fish for a while (Even though my last tank was about 5 Years ago) this time I wanted to make the Transition over to Saltwater, so far the tank is moving along the Cycle process and is just finishing up!

I have run into a few issues right out of the gate but I figure that is par for the course so I am trying not to get to frustrated or down on myself. The good part about all this is I am old and have patience to work out the hiccups as I know the rewards will outweigh the costs/frustrations when i can finally take home just that little piece of the ocean that I so long for between trips.

I have been on the site picking up equipment so you may have seen or seen messages come from me already but wanted to formally introduce myself as I have found myself on the site a lot. Hope to speak to you all at some point and hope nothing the best for all the Reefers out there!

Speak with you folks soon!

Welcome to R2R!

Where at in MN? I'm from TC (Wayzata) originally, still have family there

If you're new to SW, I would suggest reading #15 in this article first: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-01/eb/

The nitrogen cycle is only the startup of a SW tank cycle. The next 6-12 months is a maturing phase, and it's typically in this time frame where algae outbreaks occur, and if you stock the tank up too quickly, you might see corals randomly dying & fish getting sick, etc...people who are relatively new to the SW hobby (or never bothered to study this aspect of it too much) can very easily fall into the trap of chasing problems = making more problems => giving up and selling everything off. We don't want that to happen to anyone!

Long-term stability and balance are the keys, and you just can't shortcut the process significantly. That's always the #1 thing to keep in mind!

I am up here in Blaine, but will be heading to Wayzata after I get married (in California) in October! It certainly one of the top places for kids to grow up so that is where we will be!

Thanks for the article I have been doing A LOT of reading and studding of best practices and setup for my situation. The crazy part about this hobby is that there certainly isn't one way of doing it, but the nice part is if you put a lot of experiences together you can get to a logical approach to figuring out how you will be running your little piece of the ocean! I see you all of the forum and appreciate your knowledge base and direction, I am a open book looking to learn as much as I can as I wait patiently for my cycle to finish up and maturing it!

You will be pleased to know that I have set up a Algae scrubber in the sump (So I am sure we will chat much more later down the road ;)) so I am hopeful I can get that to function as well for my little ecosystem. I have a pretty small little setup with only 36 Gallons in whole through the entire system but am hopeful I am taking all the right steps.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Thanks KSchweer!! Your profile picture is amazing!! Is that out of your tank?
Thank you. Yes that was a colony of JF insane rainbow plays I had a while back. One of my favorites!

Cool! My parents live in a lake community so we're up there several times a year. Gonna be cold water on the 4th this year though I think

I'm afraid you are right... I am a real estate agent so the spring market came LATE this year! I have that will be a theme of our summer, everything running late including the warm weather.

Are you in TCMAS?
Nope, not yet. I am pretty new to Salt Water so this will be my first community.

I used to live in Wayzata also. Skol Vikings! Definitely join TCMAS, tons of helpful people, and lots of them willing to give you free frags, etc. When you do, say hi to David Grigor from Bill Bramucci. He was my partner in crime back then. We split lots' of SPS orders. He is a great mentor, and always happy to help new people. I think I'm actually still a TCMAS member even though I'm in AZ now...
