Hi people,
I'm new to saltwater aquariums but have kept tropical fish for about 10 years and finally took the leap

This might be a stupid question but when mixing salt is it common for the salt to contain shards of crystallised salt?

I have bought Tropic Marin REEF-Salt and just about to start filling and cycling a small quarantine tank to begin with and when mixing the salt along with the fine salt there is shards.

Are you sure its just salt? and not shards of a foreign object? (plastic?)
I've had chunks of salt, but you can break it up and it dissolves fine.... I can't say I've ever seen "slabs or shards" like those in my salt though.

Its not plastic off the bucket is it?

Thanks for the reply lefty,

yeah it's fresh out the bag inside the salt bucket it was pretty compact when I opened the bag, does salt have an expiration date?

Welcome!

Welcome. It is not common to contain shards of crystallized salt. Are you using a heater and power head and/or pump to mix?
Hello thanks for the reply,
Yes the water is 82 and I'm using a powerhead to mix it, the shards are dissolving but it just looked unusual to me lol

Welcome to R2R!!! I have never used Tropic Marin, but am looking to change to it. I have never had shards like that in the salt mix I currently use. I use HW Marine Reefer mix. I would try to lower the temp to 78 degrees when mixing. I am not sure if that will help, but 82 degrees is a little high IMO.

Gosh that looks like plastic
Hit it with hammer and see what happens

Thanks for advice, this is my first time mixing salt water so I wasn't sure if it was normal or not haha.

What temp do you have you main tank?
