Mixing tangs

No matter what, stress is going to be introduced into the tank adding these Tangs (and more less any others, just to different degrees). I’m not sure if I read it into your post or not....is there going to be a quarantine period before placing them in your display tank? That would give the new ones a chance to be together and for you to monitor how they’re going to be with one another, but all bets are off with the Gold Rim already existing in the tank....there are going to be some hurt feelings!!! Have you considered tank division or acclimation boxes?? Also, if you are not going to quarantine and add these fish I can almost guarantee an outbreak of Ich resultant from the induced stress. Best of luck to you!!
I have a quarantine tank, and I also have acclimation boxes, I just used one to introduce a powder brown to a gold rim last week in my bedroom tank. Those two are getting along amazingly. But then again the gold rim I have in my room is a lot more docile than the other in my living room tank. I was planning on using the acclimation boxes to introduce my new tangs to my tank with the gold rim.

It can be done (see my main tank below). Be it known Tangs are jerks....No Clearer way to say it. The Yellows and purple are the worst. They put on a show of friendliness then start the tail annoyance shortly thereafter. Just a beware.

I think as long as you quarantine the new tangs, rearrange the rocks, and add at the same time it should be fine. I would skip the powder blue. But you could do a naso tang! What other fish will you add? Here’s mine. We did 11 tangs in 300 gal all at once. But we had to remove some due to agression. We still have 6 tangs in 300gals and 2 in each our other tanks. Hope you post pictures when you add. I wouldn’t give up the gold rim that was a gift!

I do love your tank and all those tangs! I think I see a Sohal in there? We have a Sohal in our 180 FO. Love that fish!

Theres more tangs than in Picture. Sohal will turn out to be the aggressive eater and the Aggressor.

Wow! How many tangs do you have? Did you add all at once? My Sohal is 10+ yrs and huge! She’s with Angels and triggers and a scopa. The Sohal doesn’t even notice the little scopa.

Oj yeah, that sohal is a big boy. I have 14 tangs total

I have 3 ancanthurus tangs in my tank that all get along the two biggest secrets are

Feed very heavily and frequently

Add a lot of tangs it is easier to keep 6 tangs than 2 the 2 will focus on each other but the 6 will not be able to single an individual out.

My two cents. I've read a lot of "DON'T DO's" about tangs but you almost immediately turn around and see most tanks with multiple tangs mixed in, many in the same genus. Heck, even the BRS160 has two purples. I agree with what some others on here are saying. Tangs are jerks. They will, for the most part, be jerks to one another but somehow it all seems to work out MOST OF THE TIME. There do appear to be those few occasions when a yellow and a purple can't sort it out immediately. Employing tactics to settle this can possibly work/help but it seems this is not nearly as common among all tangs as people seem to say. It definitely helps you have a big tank.

Then people love to say add them all at once. Oh, and also QT all fish. There seems to be a blatant effort to ignore the conclusion that for most (95%?) people this means adding all tangs to a single QT tang of maybe 29gal? Oh but don't keep similar tangs confined in an undersized QT...

Anyways, not trying to rant/offend anyone. Personally, I'd get the fish you want and have a go at it. Acclimation boxes are a good idea. Using diffuser/egg crate to separate tangs to different sides of a tank could help. You may end up having to trap and remove one either temporarily or permanently. But my guess is if you tolerate some jerk behavior while they establish the pecking order, you'll be OK.

A yellow, hippo, powder blue, and sailfin can work. I have had that exact combo in an old pond build. Try to get them all of similar size, keep them very well fed, and at them at night. But that gold rim has to go.

Agree 100%, I had a blue hippo for years and just last week added a yellow tang and a powder blue. Everyone is getting along wonderfully!

I have had a yellow, PB and purple in one 180g tank with no issues. However, due to unrelated issues, the purple and pb both died. Now, a year later, I am looking to replace them. The yellow is still in the tank. I plan to do some re-scape, introduce the new guys together, and see what happens. If need be I am fully prepared to remove the yellow, but I hope it doesn't come to that.

I use dual 55 gal QTs for batches of tangs and angels.

We had our tangs (11) in 3 separate tanks and got a few that LFS owner quarantined for us. But somehow we still got ich. We added huge UV sterilizer, garlic, and lots of nori and some vitamins to food. Knock on wood haven’t seen ick in 6 months. But I think we still have it in the system just under good management. We also haven’t added any new fish in 6 months.
