Mp40wqd too much for 65 gallon tank?

I posted a different thread asking about return jet location and many chimed in about the mp40wqd being too much for my tank and the last thing I want to happen is a sand storm after all this time gathering equipment. Tank is 48" long. Will the mp40wqd be ok if it were powered low or would the mp10wqd be better? I'm also considering another powerhead where it says "option 1" in the photo

Im always a fan of multiple smaller pumps, I think an mp10 on each side would suffice. If you plan on doing SPS, you may find you need more. On my 4' 80g I'm doing two neptune WAV pumps and 2 mp10s.

Yes that is a view from above. The fish tank is being built in a corner wall. The side the overflow is in is the fish room. I'd rather not have powerheads outside that room. Also they would be controlled by the Apex using the vortech module

Gotcha, in that case, I'd consider the WAV starter kit. You can aim these as opposed to being solely perpendicular to the glass. Fully controllable with apex and just as many features/functions as a vortech.

I'm running an MP40qd on a 75 gal
On reef crest mode great flow no sand storm. It runs a max of 50% power if I turn it up I could blow sand everywhere

I already own the mp40wqd but don't quite have tank up and running yet. I suppose I could sell it since I still need just a couple more items but im very close. I was able to get a heck of a deal on the mp40 which was never used on ebay awhile back

I think you will be fine. I run an MP40QD in my 60 Frag and also have a smaller Sicce that I can position and move around tank as needed when I am doing my cleanings - also running bare botttom and I crank up the flow.

Gotcha! I also have the MP40QD and it's great. It would be more than adequate for your tank at that length and not too much flow at all. Good luck. Can't wait to see it all come together!

Awesome. Thank you for the responses. Yes I just got the 2 50 gallon water tanks for the saltwater and rodi water. Just need to get the pan world 40px pump to mix water and plumb the tank. So close!!!

If you want the MP40 then get it.
The remote control will let you set the speed and or wave motion to your likings
I run a Gyre and love it but they're not bullet proof built like a MP.

Either way the regular MP40 or the MP40W QD is good. The magic's in the remote. I'd rather go over size and tune it back. If you go to a bigger reef in the future it will still be good.

I use three mp40 on my 60 cube. All about what settings you use.

Gonna hurt ya on this. I love MP's
But..If that's the top location pushing water across the top hitting the other side wall and coming back then you would have been more happy with a Gyre. JMO
For myself an MP and Gyre have two different niche's

I don't want to repeat your other thread, but this much seems worth (re)posting...

The mp40 is not "too much" except for the effect on your sand bed.

The problem with the mp40 (aside from the cost) is that it's too weak to cover the tank in a reasonable manner. "Reasonable" still only means flowing about half of the tank, unless it's running at 100%. Even at that, the flow is on the slow (low velocity) side of things.

@iluisi runs a larger tank that's similarly proportioned and uses mp60's (which are much stronger and much higher-velocity; see video) in a pretty clever way to flow his whole tank. The tank has to be bare-bottomed and his investment is still high, but it works! (Hope that mention works...looks dead as I post it.)

@mcarroll , would it be wiser to sell the mp40 and use the gyre xf230 for better circulation? Unfortunatey I dont think its compatible with Apex

For lots of reasons* I still favor the Tunze options listed. But the Gyre would also definitely be better than the mp40.

And in a nutshell, yes....whatever you choose instead, I think that selling the mp40 would be the best course.
