BTW, I dunno for sure if this is the specific unit you'd want....but I think this one is for seriously large tanks. I know I've seen folks run large tanks off of the smaller two models.

I'm running 2 MP40s on a 29 gallon standard tank which is 30" long and have no issues with a sandstorm. I've got them about 6"-8" down and about 4" from the front running at 35-40% synced on Reefcrest mode.

I'm running 2 MP40wqd on reef crest antisync at 60% on a 63g tank. No sandstorm problems for me

Keep your mp40's. And no it won't be "too much" as I think two would be better, but I think you'll be more than happy with it being able to control it via apex.

I bought tunez pumps (2-6105's) and they were HUGE compared to the vortechs plus cords in the water but they do produce more flow. I Ended up returning them.
As far as gyre I've never had one.

Since your already doing it with apex I would stick with the ecotech route imo.

I'm running 4 mp40's on my 180 now and couldn't be happier.

How would I place 2 mp40's in my tank? Both on the side wall or 1 on back and 1 on side? Decisions are so hard in this hobby

Both on back walls one at each side.

Would 1 xf250 gyre be a better option vs. 2 mp40's? Perhaps the Gyre will eventually be Apex compatible.

One on each side would be ideal.

That would be good but unfortunately that isn't an option for my build since 1 side will be exposed in the living area

I have actually seen same size tank with them on back walls and doing great. Always dial back and can then move them up as things go. Adding a gyre would also be great with both of them on pulse to create random currents.

Ah gotcha. Decisions decisions lol. It's all up to you man. But If u go with ecotech I'd do mp40 on one side and mp10 or another 40 on the back wall dialed down. Or gyre on side and current mp on back wall. Or sell and get a tunez 6105 (it's a bigger footprint in tank).

I'm an ecotech fan so you know my choice.

If you want the flow to start at one side of tank, moving the (total surface) top of the water to the far side of tank going done far side glass and flows back to the pump from bottom / mid levels of tank.

You could sell one one the MP's (As you said) and get the Gyre. This is really the Gyre's niche.

Or you can mount both Mp's on one side up high and give them a shot.

If this flow patten is what you want. Then get a Gyre. I run mine in pulse mode.
MP's have their niche's too.

I have 2 MP 40's on my 75. One would be enough but I like the constant back amd forth motion.

I run 2-mp40wqd (one on each side-set at 1/2) and 1-MP10 (on the back wall-set at 3/4), on my 75g.

I run two M40QWD on a 36" 70G tank. For the below reasons...

1. I feel having at least 2 pumps is much more beneficial when it comes to decreasing "dead spots"
2. It opens up different modes... I run on pulse mode anti sync which basically is the closest thing I could get to an ocean wave going out and coming back in.
3. I was going to go with two MP10 but the price increase to the MP40 is relatively small for the performance.
4. At this point I would be open to adding a 3rd on the back wall.

1 MP40QWD will be fine. But 2 Mp10 or 2 MP40(or combination) would be better. And 3 would most likely be ideal(some might think overkill)

This is just my opinion. And we all know how much opinions are worth
