I got an Apex and your flyer was inside it. I thought oh cool this guy is on You Tube and has spoken at our fish nerd club. He will show me how to set up my Apex. I was so wrong. When i opened the link it was nothing but a money grab. You have lost my respect and I have unsubscribed to your You Tube channel. And have suggested others that are following you to do the same. You get a check from Google, you get paid from local clubs to speak. You get free products from suppliers..Your vids are informative but they are not worth paying for. All the info you put out is readily available on all reef and fish forums. Really you want me to pay you for a video on how to set up my new Apex. Hey Apex has a free user forum and there are lots of people not getting paid by Google, Neptune, and speaking engagements giving better advice than you for free. I understand you have overhead making these videos. but your amount of followers and likes net you a pretty nice monthly check. I have been in this hobby for years now. You are the first i have seen to **** fellow hobbyist of there hard earned money for something the can get for free from other reef / fish enthusiast. You are very intelligent and i enjoy your you tube channel but this left a sour taste in my mouth and I will no longer support you and have encouraged others to do the same.

Just a Question why have you disabled comments on your You Tube Channel? This message will be posted on all Reef forums I belong to.

That's odd. Because I used a few of his free videos in October to help me set mine up. They were very helpful and informative. I wonder if it changed? And no offense, but he is in the business to make money. He gives out tons of free information as it is.

I applaud the guy for making a living at something he loves. I wish I could say the same. I often get his solicitations for selling his products. I don't blame him for asking, I just don't buy.

My issue is that when I opened my new Apex there is a 4"6" postcard in it with his picture and you tube channel. The post card states he will guide you through setting up Apex. It has a link that just ask you to pay for his vids and in the link he is selling the Apex But the offer is closed. I don't need to buy the Apex I already have one. I applaud the guy for making money doing what he loves. But his revenue source from his you tube channel makes him more than most of us make in a year. He is at a point where he no longer needs paid subscriptions to his info to make a living. There are others making vids free with the same info. They seem to be happy with what they are paid from google, and other ad generated revenue.

Re: Mr. Saltwater

I believe you are off base on your statement. Mr. Saltwater in the business..... and that business is also about making money. He has a family which he and many reefer's have but it just so happens that his business is something he enjoys. Yes, you can acquire the information directly from Apex but sometimes consultants offer "tricks. special options, etc." that aid in special aquarium setup's. You can not be serious and expect that all the advice that he gives out should be free??? I'm sure if you weigh the amount of advise that he freely gives it is not comparable to the small amount which he charges for. I'm confused.... I don't understand why you would try and derail his business just because you disagree with his style of business.....you could have just opted out and not hired him for his service. Even in your statement you stated that you enjoyed his video's but because he is charging for a service you get upset? This logic I did not understand..... I would agree with you if he provided erroneous information, or was charging for something which was substandard, or was taking advantage of Reefers....but this is not the case. Your gripe with him is that he is charging for a service which you can freely refuse.

I have seen my fair share of crooks in this business. My first saltwater tank was in 1976...yes...1976 and in California was with a group of guys making canister filters out of PVC. I work with companies which pioneered parts of the industry. I have seen companies come in the business and go out like a flash of lighting. But this is not the case with Mr. Saltwater Tank. This method of communication is welcomed in our hobby and greatly needed and assaults like this should be addressed. In todays internet postings you can destroy a persons business without factual information .....just based on person feelings....

My suggestion is that you think a second time before stating such feeling in an open fourm

When I first got in the hobby I watched his videos and thought he had good advice.

I bought his "guide to tank cruise control"

It was garbage.

Half the guide literally is the owners manual for an apex unit.

I asked for and received a refund then I subscribed from his website and channel.

I didn't mind paying for his advice and guidance but to charge me for the apex owners manual was a load of BS.

+1 totally agree, Don't hate on a man for making a living hes providing for his family. And don't put it out in public like this cause it just doesn't sound good on your end imo, There's a reason why his channel has been so successful and he can charge whatever he wants for whatever he wants.

Sometimes a little research before you jump the gun and slam somebody is important.

I'm sure that is a rough estimate, but he is at most make 20K a year off of youtube.

Like you pointed out you can use the APEX supplied documentation for free. I'm sure it's adequate to get the unit set-up. However I think Mr. Saltwater provides a valuable service to the reefing community. A lot of people don't like reading manuals and having a how to video is great.

Any yes, he is getting free products to test and use on his tanks. But that didn't happen overnight. He had to put time, effort and his own money into his business.

I just don't understand why you would be so adamant about slandering his name on all the reef forums you belong to over a 4x6" post card in an Apex box. It's advertising plain and simple.

I dont believe I am off base. I think the guy has allot to offer to this hobby. Although I think he is getting greedy and falsely advertising. Do you know what he makes off his You Tube channel? Do you know what he gets for speaking engagements? I enjoy his vids and advise but to open a $500 plus purchase to see a postcard with his link to help on setting it up and then wanting more money. I think is absolute BS. His advertising is the first thing you see when you open your new Apex. His postcard is the first thing you see. Then the Apex and under the Apex is a 2 page start up guide. I think it is bad taste for Neptune to do this. I am not trying to slander the guy but I think Neptune and Mr saltwater tank made a bad choice. My only point I am trying to make is that he is getting paid from ad based commercials on you tube. You click that like button he gets paid. You subscribe to his channel he gets paid. Why does he need me to pay him to show me how to set up product that has a 10.000 page and growing user manual.

Your wrong he doesn't get paid for likes or subscribers he gets paid for views and when people click on the add, And he deserves every bit of it, People don't realize how much work is put into videos like his and that's one of the reasons he has so many sponsors, I know him pretty good and he's a great guy and btw the reason he disables his comments is because so many jealous people out there fill his comment box with tons of negative feedback and dirty comments all because of jealousy and he doesn't want new and exspeacially younger subscribers to have to see those dirty comments which I respect big time.

IMO just toss the ad away and be done with it. How is it hurting you? I'm sure some people would gladly pay money to have someone explain to them in lamens terms how to set up the apex. It can be a very confusing system. If it wasn't high quality I'm sure neptune wouldn't go out of their way to put it in the box. No need to bash the guy on every forum your a member of. Just ignore the ad like the other thousands of ads you come across on a daily basis and be done with it. Just my opinion.

It's hard to make a career in YouTube making aquarium videos it's not like a gaming or music channel that can blow up easily, He has put in years of hard work into that channel to get it where it's at so it really sucks seeing people giving such negative feedback on all the forums over something like this.

Making a video on setting up something like that is not easy. I would not expect anyone to do it for free, especially someone trying to support a family (plus a new baby) running a tank consulting business. I give him props for giving anything of value away!!

Seriously. Who gives a crap if it's $500 or $5,000? What does that have to do with anything? Calling somebody "greedy and falsely advertising", that's a pretty bold statement you're making...

Wow i touched a nerve. I too have a newborn baby 13 days old. I also have saltwater tanks in my house. So do I buy diapers or give this guy money for info that is already out there. Go ahead and hate on me I could care less I am just stating that Neptune made a bad choice stuffing what says to be free videos on how to set up the Apex. It is not free the one video is nothing but but an advertisement for purchasing mr saltwatertanks subscription and product specials that don't exist anymore.

4 of your `13 posts on the forum is a rant about and ad. Not good form there.:)

Enable feedback on you tube. That way we could have a discussion and real feedback on your opinions and how to vids. That way we all might learn something from everyone out there in this hobby. I have nothing against the guy, but to ask for money and disable feedback on you tube??????

Like I said before there's many big YouTube channels that have to disable comments and its because of people leaving comments like you did here there's just no need for it, I don't think Neptune's is going to worry about 1 person saying they made a bad choice. This thread accomplished absolutely nothing lol

Has any one of you seen the postcard? It states click on this link and mr saltwater tank will show you how to set up the Apex for free. My only point is it is not free and I thought it was in bad taste. In fact the link seems to be expired and and has offers to buy the apex from him to get the " free vids " or pay his subscription fee.

He has had issues with this in the past.

One video he started of saying he was going to show a new way of algea control. Just when it got informative he cut the video and said to see the rest buy my book.

The viewers were so upset that he released another video apologizing for it and gave everyone a free chapter to his "no nonsense guide second edition."
