MTRC Coral Library

How long is checkout for most frag

90 days, but the time can be extended for certain circumstances. For example, one member brought his grow out back to return a polyp but the polyps were grown too closely for safe fragging. Another member has not had more than a baby polyp grow in the 90 days so more time has been given. On the other end, you don't have to wait the full 90 days to return a polyp, if you have super fast growth a polyp can be returned before the 90 days and grab another coral.

We could use the membership dues to start one of these no?

Or is that money used for something else?

We started off with zoas because they are easy to grow, grow fast, and most people want them. The purpose of the library is that members can get high end more expensive corals at really affordable prices. We have limited what members can donate to ensure we only keep higher end items. We don't really have any common stuff.

This here is the purpose. Common stuff is cheap enough to just buy or sell

Exactly with more common/ cheap stuff, more than likely your giving it away, trading it, or selling for very cheap. We are trying to give people the opportunity to buy high end named items that some hobbyist would not otherwise be able to afford.

My main concern with all of this is who will be the one to take responsibilty for their care, and what happens when folks check out a high end coral and kill it before anyone else had an oppurtunity to get a frag? I have a hard time believing everyone will just be like, "oh well, chalk it up as a loss"

We keep at least one polyp of each morph in the club tank (I maintain the club tank), if a loaned polyp dies from an unknown reason (stuff happens) as soon as the club has a polyp to give it will be given to the original member. If poor water quality is suspected, a water sample will be requested and if the water quality is sub par the member will not be allowed to check out any more corals until a good water sample can be provided. IMO, if a member is going to participate in the library they should have the courtesy of keeping proper water chemistry.
