So my tank has been up and running a week tomorrow. I picked it up off craigs list it had live sand two clowns a shrimp and some crabs. I put in dry rock, and sugar fine sand for LFS. My water has not changed from day one. I took all the water and moved it with the tank, except about 2 cups. It's growing coralline, some green algae on the glass. My water test today was

calcium 460ppm
DKH 11
Phosphate .25
PH 8.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 1
Nitrate 20

I have added some more CUC. Do you guys think the tank will cycle? Any thoughts about the nitrite?

Going through a cycle that's why u have nitrites. Its the new rock/sand. All the bacteria that handles the cycle is mainly in your rocks/sand not water

I was thinking with the ammonia being at 0 every day, it would have showed something by now? Am I wrong?

I was just wondering if you had test your nitrites with 2 different types of test kits to compare results. API are not the most reliable kits available. I would think it is possible you are going through a mini cycle, just keep an eye on your parameters, and be prepared to do a couple of good sized water changes.

And welcome to the MTRC forum btw!

I find api basic tests to be fairly accurate. Showing 0 amm is likely from small bio load and that there was some bacteria in water and the tank itself unless u cleaned it first.

I did not clean the tank, I did put in some snails to clean the algae off the back wall and I added all the dry rock in the pic, some sugar sand from LFS to the live sand, just was not enough sand in the tank. Fish are all happy and eating good. I just don't get. The 1 from the beginning?

I would recommend a small piece of LR from or 1/2 cup sand from a club member without any pests. Store bought live rock can introduce a ton of nasties. Good luck and have fun.

Anyone wanna part with some live rock to seed my tank? My I'd buy some sand too, just to have some different stuff in there. Thanks
