TSA Spyro The Dragon

Perry I love the TSA Spyro. I have had so much encrusting before any new branches growing but after a year mine is finally taking off. Here is where mine is at (PC Rainbow on bottom right and Spyro to the left)

Hey Ed,
Thanks for posting, and thanks for the lovely pic, gives me an idea of what's coming, specifically because of the placement. I know where my PC Rainbow needs to be to show that green to mustard to red fade. Nicely done BTW. Mine is actually in similar zone, so should trend in this direction. I am definitely looking forward to seeing this one grow out. It, as well as many others woke up in the last couple months, things have been on a good trajectory. All the best my brother :)

Good morning fellow Acro Nerds!
For those of you who follow my content here, IG, or YouTube, I am currently into my 5th dose of @coral reeftank "Concoction". I plan to document on YouTube mainly, so if you want my personal take, head on over there :) Last summer, as Alan graduated from Princeton, we were going back and forth over some really cool concepts of Acropora feeding, bacteria, and its role on a closed environment. I am excited to see that Alan has went to production with an idea he had to combine many products, essentially a reef feed marinade. Not to be confused with an acropora feed, this one surely goes WAY deeper into the balancing of many reef related feeders. This concept aligns deeply with my personal philosophy of reef keeping and life in general.

Tim, this changes the game for power outages, I will buy another Delta 2 so the xtra battery can swap back and forth from my bedroom where I have portable AC unit, TV, computer, basically a comfort zone during outage. The Generator can run on constant for other home essentials, as well as charging batteries. Being able to relax during these hurricane outages is a good investment as I get older. My next energy backup will include install of a serviceable 200 gallon propane tank t9 allow multiple weeks of outages if necessary ;)
Some may read, some may not, either way, the few who get it, cool ;)
Backup plans. I have attached my recent Y-Tube short, to show my backup system.
Ecoflow Delta 2 with the backup battery. On a short test, with the 2 combined, I could run 2 Orphek OR3 Blues, 2 Jeboa SOW-20's, and EcoTech M1 @70%, the battery and back up, would last at least 12, maybe 14 hours. Now this doesn't seem like much, but it takes up to 500 inbound watts of solar. Also, Your generator can recharge the battery and backup in 2 hours. Now, that's at 1200 watts recharge, mine is changed to only charging at 500 inbound watts, as to keep the heat lower, which, that data is available through the blue tooth or wifi app. So, my generator would take around 6 hours, no worries at 500 watts, it runs constantly at 3500 watts, and is off propane.
Here's the mind blow, this runs on their "EPS" mode, which essentially making it a seamless UPS. So, those pumps and lights, are able to run when power goes down, without power loss. The wifi app, will give you data on your battery, watt input/output, as well as battery memory, and more. So, if you're at work, and there's a power loss, no worries ;)
To me, it seems that this should be considered before livestock, but it took me lots of stressful moments, to finally get peace of mind, lol. Thanks for reading :)

Hello Perry,

I love your setup and follow along. The corals you have are amazing! I love this idea and intend to get a similar one in the very near future. I have a question though; how does this setup interact with a GFCI outlet? My concern is if the GFCI trips for good reason the inverter switches on and continues to provide power.

Hi Jason,
Great question! Also thank you for checking out the journal and kind words :)
As far as GFCI, if it tripped from a power outage, then power restored, but still tripped on GFCI, you would continue to use battery supply, until manually resetting the GFCI switch. I don’t believe the battery could signal a reset. I am not 100, but I would imagine it is not different than pulling the plug, then no power until plugged back in, at least from an input standpoint.

Edit: Also if something triggered or popped GFCI, battery treats as a power outage and seamlessly transfer to battery. You can also add solar inputs, and it gas a generator that it interacts with too. Very cool

Florida residents, especially new to FL residents. Please make sure to have energy backups in mind. This year is forecasted to be a heck of a season, specifically on the east coast. As a surfer, this is excellent news, as a reefer, no so much... Do not take power outages for granted, comfort is a serious advantage, peace of mind, unmeasurable...
I use the Ecoflow Delta2 for my reef, and Ecoflow Delta2 for my bedroom, where I have portable AC, fan, computer, all for comfort... For the reef, the Delta2 handsomely provides hours of backup, uninterrupted, for 2 powerheads, main pump(EcotechL1 60%) and a fan to blow air over the reef for cooling. To change my batteries, I have a Hybrid 5500 Duromaxx Generator, running propane, with 7 tanks on hand.
I know this seems like overkill, but move to FL and get back to me, lol. My future plans will include the Ecoflow Pro, with Solar inputs, this will be my next year goal, to then degrid my reef and run the entire system solar 100% on battery backup. Telegram gets into the Ecoflow River, and that is a great option for mid range tanks. I haven't completely tested, but with items tied into the reef backup, looks like 98+ hours run time.

Edit: Due to low pull on battery, the entire reef, less than lighting for the display on backup. This includes ATO, 2 Skimmers, Auto dosing pump for big 3, light for frag system, and powerhead in frag tank. I will run a mock test soon and share, but the total watts pulled is still less than 275 watts continuous.

Perry how are you liking the Delta2? I didn't research them much but have an ecoflow river 2 being shipped because of telegraham's recommendation. I'm debating getting solar panels to charge in case a hurricane or big storm decides to come through.

Hey Tim,
I like it so much I have 2 Delta2 and a backup battery. Each unit is 1024Wh. After testing, it seems the Delta2 alone, w/o extra battery, will run my reef fan, 2 Jeboa Largest powerheads, and Ecotech L1 @60% for 4 days on a single charge.
This is a bit more juice than the River, but after getting the Delta2 and Backup battery, getting a deal on another made sense, this way the extra battery can swap between the 2 head units. Each can take 2 extra batteries, so 3k Wh total max. I would go up a couple sizes next, no more expanding.
Reef goal is to capture solar longterm as a means to 100% degrid my reef system entirely, including reef room/hobby room.

As a rough estimate, I would need to have around 4.5k Wh overc24 hours to make this work. Likely will go Delta Pro w/ extra battery at 6k wh total. This will need 3x500 watt panels as well. Pricey investment, but good to set goals, lol...

It's nice to have the secure feeling when a hurricane rolls in too! Worth it I say.

Hi ,
I placed a pc rainbow circa 1ft under the leds a few weeks ago
Any idea what the color will be if it's higher placed?

Tim,
What created this idea was having to leave work, go home fire up the generator, then go back to work, assuming the text from Duke came through. It was the unplanned outages, the out of nowhere outages, that seem more frequent. Also, the on off flickering, then the restart, followed by the overflow of the skimmer due to height changes in the sump, and no delay on the skimmer start. See, to me, it's all those little things adding up that compels me to create redundancy, emergency UPS/constant power, and above all, getting old, and planning on it getting more and more challenging.
As far as Solar goes, this is something I am about to dig deeper into over the winter, when the garden stalls and I have to have other learning interests, lol... From my understanding, I think the Delta2 peaks at 500w inbound from solar. I have to recheck. Now, being able to collect that much during the day with a 400watt panel for example would be unreasonable. However, not for the essentials, you could easily run what I need for "reef essentials" on solar, with the Delta2, given it would essentially recharge the battery from what depleted during that 24 hour interval. That said, a return pump, on the River, with a 200watt solar input, likely would easily handle most "return pump" applications, especially in FL, given you have a good enough angle to capture sunlight.
Where it gets interesting is the app controlability of these batteries. You can actually set the battery to prioritize solar over ac, giving you the ability to save on electricity if you choose a more permanent style of solar capture. These batteries also accept off car battery as well. This gives a multitude of options, and leads me to why I am considering starting a delivery service option for corals. Still kind of in the process of figuring it out, but I could easily use one of my Delta2 to transport live corals, keeping the climate exactly where I wanted, with wave movement, and led lighting during transport. I have a design to use a sump to avoid overflow spillage during transport as well, this way I could use carbon in the bucket sump design, as well as biomedia. I am less than a month away from being able to go live... If I did this, then I could set up delivery in the state of FL, and if enough orders consolidated, travel periodically and deliver goodies... More to come on that ;) Maybe you could be my first customer, lol...

Hello Jack!
That is my late grandfather's name :)
I find the PC Rainbow to show all the brilliance around 250ish. I don’t measure, but generally keep it out of the light or in lower regions of the tank. Here, the encrust line shows a beautiful green, into a mustard/gold, then red into the base. New growth tips can turn bluish, making this an outstanding piece. If you give it heavy light, it will likely go mostly red, a beautiful red that's unmistakable, however, it will in turn overgrow the system. I will tag you later in my little saved piece, and the Tyree Mango Rainbow which is essentially the exact coral with a different name. I have both, my Mango Rainbow needs a serious haircut ;)

That's awesome Perry I hope you document it as you go. I was looking at their website yesterday and they really have a lot of options. I was thinking the same thing the other day if I or someone ever had to move you could have a tank in your car with batteries running pumps, a heater, and a light if need be taking the stress off. I would love to be your first customer but hopefully I will get up your way first!

Great , your late grandfather was named Ravensbergen as well ?
Curious how this acro will grow in color , it will be nice to see some pics of it in your tank.
Thanks , grtz from amsterdam in the netherlands , jack

Actually he was an Irishman, lol, Jack was his name :)
I will get you a picture soon, but that coral looks happy to me ;)

Welcome home Mr Nuetron, stoked to have you back in the lineup! This BC piece is the most radical yellow I have seen, and yes, I have had the OG PL, and it's more yellow, but... Give me some white pearling, and this dude gets weak, like kryptonite weak...
