My battle against AEFW

The only way you will get rid of them is to find the ones with eggs and scrap off the eggs, then dip that coral several times. Lots of time the adults will be on the coral with eggs. Dip other corals as well just in case. But the main thing is to keep an eye on the eggs so you don't allow them to multiply. Try revive I heard it works very well. Dip in it wait 10 min and blow them with a baster. Do it once a week for a month and you will be fine. It does not hurt to cover the dead tissue at the base with glue so if you miss any eggs they won't hatch. Good luck

Montipora are safe. No worries for those. Aefw only affect acros, so birdsnest, poccilopora, & montis are fine to be left in the tank.

It is key to get every small chunk out, though, and dipped.

Home from work and the battle is still raging. Made some make shift egg crate for my 40b . Removing colonies from my dt is a pita luckily my tank is shallow.

My red planet was slowly dying. Note the large egg masses on the bottom of the colony. I will have to drag this apart.

It seems that this coral was your starter.

Fwiw, I didn't ever scrape any eggs. Breaking the cycle is what works. Killing the newly hatched before they can lay more eggs. That's why it's key to dip every six days. It breaks the cycle.

I tried revive (along with just about anything else ever tested against aefw) and it only stuns them. Same with coral RX - stunned only and they can hang on. Bayer is the only thing I've tested that will make the buggers curl up and die. And it needs to be at a high enough concentration, otherwise they come back to life if you put them in clean SW. Flatworm exit (theoretically just levimasole diluted) has zero effect on them. Pig dewormer (levimasole) works well, but is very harsh on acros, and you'll lose half or more through the process, because nothing kills the eggs. I don't recommend in tank with levimasole, either. Some have had success, but again, there are many more that have killed the tank or seen issues arise at a later date that have been unexplained.

If the eggs are left on the skeleton they eventually will hatch. Scraping them off, you now combating with the adults not to lay anymore and kill them. I also did the flatworm stop and coral booster from zeovit and it helped

Bayer works 100%. Fwiw, I've found nothing else that works without killing a large percentage of coral. I doubt the zeo additives eliminate the flatworms. From my readings, it does help with colors and growth, though, so if you're okay spending $100s on an additive to have good color and growth and living with aefw, I think it may be a viable, albeit insanely expensive alternative. Just don't sell, trade or give away any frags ever without disclosing that you have them.

After dipping in Coral Rx and entering qt my Walt Disney is show some Pe

This unknown acro has Pe as well. I have not seen Pe on this piece in a while.

The bite marks are very prevalent I this photo.

FWiw I am talking from experience of my own and only suggesting. I don't trade or sell I normally give for free and no one ever got any aefw from me. As I said " I had them" and succeeded also cause I noticed them very early in the game. Btw the zeo vit products are not all for colors. The flatworm stop and reef booster together helps corals add more slime and it help against flat worms. No body said it kills them but it starves them cause they don't penetrate to the skeleton. It worked for me.

I can not comment on revive because I haven't used it. I did however use coral Rx. I used 8 caps full for 2 gallons of water.

I can confirm that a lot of aefw fell off the corals from dipping because when I finished I had a ton at the bottom. However I can't say how many didn't fall off that weren't effected from coral Rx.

Most of them were dead after the dipping was complete. That I can confirm because when I went to dump the water they were sloshing around in the water. The ones that were alive were clung tight to the bottom of the container and would not budge .

I plan on using BAYER the day after tomorrow on a second round in case the coral Rx didn't take care of some.

Everyone has their own approach where it might work well for some and bad for others. That's why I appreciate yalls input. I love hearing of different success stories.

The best part about this hobby is listening to other reefers experiences and applying the advice to your own setup and putting your own twist on it.

You're doing great and getting at war with the dreadful AEFW and DIE they must!
I suggest using only the Bayer from now on, the Rx will work too but it's stressful on your SPS.
As you must know I followed and visit Tektite (Cat) and Kate Rawlinson on their project to find a cure and the best treatments for AEFW, I had most of the info from them.
Dipping every five days each coral for at least 15min and rinsing them twice by shaking them in a large bucket with tank water.
If you see eggs either scrape them off as you get instant break on the cycle or frag your corals if you have a lot.
That last one will help your corals recover a lot faster and you'll end up with some extra frags that you can sell later on.
Keep treatment going for at least 8 weeks and if you not sure do more if you like.
That same time keep your DT free of SPS, that means also any birdnest, etc, etc.....!!
LPS, softies and monti is fine in the DT, AEFW may hide on the but won't eat from it and will starve within 4 weeks.
Remove all encrusting's and get a Melanurus Wrasse, I find these the best hunters of AEFW on your rock as they will come out to find SPS and the wrasse is there to get them as a sniper pulling the trigger :D
I believe Dennis (FJW) has a Melanurus with my name on it as mine did the jump out one of my frag tanks, you go get him tomorrow as I will order a new one for next week.
Keep me informed and we play this game plan solid, you don't have to lose any of your SPS anymore.

Thanks for joining in on this discussion brother Diesel! I will definitely stop by FJW as soon as I get some time.

I went to Ocean life aquatics the same day I purchased the Bayer and Coral RX and scooped up a close to 4" male Leopard Wrasse. That little guy hid the first night ,came out the 2nd day and started eating Mysis immediately. I wonder if a melanaurus and male leopard will place nice together.

Its funny you mentioned sniper! lol. We just might have to hold off on our plans with the sniper and coral deal until I can get this straightened out.

I have no problems with my Melanurus and Leopard in the DT, they have been playing nice for 2 yrs now.

HAHA, the sniper thingie has nothing to do the deal we have, but now you mentioned it kind of fits the occasion, LOL.
I was planning on fragging corals for you next week as all my racks are still full but one guy suppose to stop by this weekend and next week if weather will play nice I'll ship a 24 pack out.
That will give me plenty of room for yours and we have time to heal them as we speak.

This right here is a fine plan.
I also would encourage dosing peroxide with this plan.
This would keep them on the move and starve :-)

To make light out of a dire situation Time is something I now have a lot of, lol. Heck I might just throw all these corals out and start over with the pack I'm getting from you in the future. I appreciate you bud.

Thank you sir I will look into Peroxide dosing. I have heard of it before but never tried. Is it something you dose the QT with? or a dipping container?

Right in main tank and also can be done in qt.
1ml per 8 gallons of water volume. Harmless to the tank mates :-)
