My fish jumped...again

I had horrible luck with firefish on my first tank. Didn’t have a lid at first, he went carpet surfing. Got a diy lid kit and a little while later another firefish (I do love them) and the poor guy managed to find a < 1/2 gap in the back where where cables came out and he jumped. Worst part was he some how managed to land on top of the mesh... poor guy died an inch above the water

Lost a yellow goby as well he managed to jump into the overflow, down into the sump, then jumped out of the sump. I found him but he didn’t make it very long.

Current tank much better lid, no issues so far but I do worry about water changes etc

I lost 2 jawfish. They really worked at getting out of the tank.

diamond goby it made it through the lid not sure how. Chalk bass lost his life to the potato chip disease.

While I haven't lost a fish, my Purple Tang did recently get so wound-up during a feeding that he jumped right out of the tank in front of me. I now watch him closely when ever I feed. He dances around like an excited puppy wanting a treat.

Yeah, I've lost a few to that "one tiny gap", or forgetting to put the screen back on. One of the most painful was my yellow "coris" wrasse. The mesh cover was on! He jumped and landed on the cover for the overflow box. I found him dried out there in the morning. I am almost sure he would have flipped back into the tank had the mesh cover not been in the way. But that's like arguing against a seatbelt because that one time someone got trapped and ignoring multitude of lives they've saved. I know I've heard several jump attempts that were stopped by it.

I had this happen a few times. Now that I bought the lid (been a few years now), no more deaths (and I've seen a few times the lid has saved my fish). Before the lid, I lost a couple of wrasses and a diamond goby.

Do you have a Mesh lid or glass/acrylic lid?

I also had a 7 inch discus jump out of a tank. Found him because a boxer puppy that was visiting was standing over it 'barking like crazy'. Put him back in the tank - doing fine.

I just lost my black cap jawfish jumped out at night, forgot put lid on after feeding. This was few weeks ago. My linespot flasher wrasse has jumped 4x this last time he was covered in dog hair when found him, made it luckily. Sorry about your clownfish loss

My harlequin (the first one) literally (like a trout or something in a lake) - would jump when I took the lid off and tried to get the food out of my hand. He would be sitting in his resting spot - the minute the freezer opened - he would be out swimming. He would/could literally jump 3 inches to reach my hand (easily) and bit me one day........ He was about 4.5 inches body size.

i forget where i heard it, but i remember someone said if you think about it, these fish don't live 2 feet below the surface generally. they get scared 40 feet down in the ocean and it's not a problem. they freak out a few inches from the surface of our tanks, not good news. even if they freak out near the surface in the ocean, as long as they aren't at the flat edge of the earth , they'll be good to go assuming some bird isn't in prime position

As I was feeding tanks, found these two firefish gobies on the carpet dried up. Thought there was something F I S H Y as they were not at the top for their feeding

While I haven't lost a fish, my Purple Tang did recently get so wound-up during a feeding that he jumped right out of the tank in front of me.

They do insist on being in all parts of the tank at once and express outrage that any other fish would attempt to eat the slightest scrap of 'their' food.

I have had a few, the one where I felt the worst was a Blue Ribbon Eel. We had him about 3 years I think, my son 8 to 10 years old I can't 100% remember. But anyway he didn't get the lid closed, a sad day he cried for a long time. Me to sort of too this was around 20 years ago it was very expensive.

I’ve lost a few fish to jumping, but the worst was a clown I lost that I had for over 8 years. I got her as a small juvenile had her about 5 years before I moved. When we moved we couldn’t bear to part with her so I actually shipped her and another fish to another reefer for holding while I moved from California to North Carolina. Once we moved I setup a new tank and picked them up. About 3 years later I left one of the screen tops off the tank after feeding and she jumped during the night.

What fish have you guys lost?

It’s heart breaking
I also lost my Clownfish (he was 5 years old) through jumping.
I also lost a golden head sleeper goby through this.
