Hey everyone, just thought I'd pipe in here. Right now the plan is for me to house the corals.
Obviously the same risks and rules are going to apply to most any growout. It won't be any different for the My Miami. Understandably for some this sort of arrangement isn't ideal. It does make a difference of course who houses the corals. I volunteered to house them as I am confident that I would have positive results and know my system is stable/established, and I am in this hobby long-term.
For a little info on me/my systems, for those who don't know, I've been keeping aquariums for 20 years, reefing for about 10. I currently have 50 aquariums running (had 106, totalling over 5,000g at one point, but had to downgrade), mostly freshwater breeding programs for very rare/exotic species. I have a 310g sps/lps reef, a 75 gallon zoa/paly dominated tank, a 40g custom frag tank, and a 30 breeder which I use as a backup frag tank. All tanks are run independantly. My 75 is the oldest system right now, having been running continuously for about either years. I have never had a crash or instability problem with any of my tanks. I am very attentive and I am a stay-at-home dad, so I have time to putz around a bit more with my corals than some. My plan would be to put the My Miami into the 75, as I have been getting stellar growth with my chalices in there.
I started with a 1 eye frag of the ECC Hybrid last October and as of now I have 13 eyes and it has gone from about 1/2" to 2.3-3" in that time period. I got a small piece of OME which had eight eyes. I fragged it in half right away and gave half to someone else. In one month my half has gone from four eyes to 9 plus some more eyes budding. Got a pumpkin patch at about the same time. 1 whole eye and one partial, now has 7. I have severeal other chalices that have all averaged at least one eye or better per month, including a tyree pink watermelon and some others like the bazooka joe (went from one eye to three in about 4-5 months time, nearly doubled in size). I individually hand feed all of my lps and many zoas about 3-4 times per week with a variety of pellets, mysis, diced plankton, spirulina flake, cyclop-eeze, and other stuff. I've been seeing great results from this. I'm just mentioning all of these things to give everyone some idea of who the coral is going to.
I am also working on a deal for the BPC Flamethrower and also the Monster Mash and Sherbert Orange. Happy to allow others in on these growouts as well. I'm not sure on how many I'll take on the flamethrower and others, but it has a rep for being slower growing, so it would be more complicated having more chalices on possibly different time tables. I may not be able to commit to as many people in the same amount of time for the slower growing chalices.
For the growth rate on the my miami, I can only say that from my observations it would seem it should be a normal grower. Its morphology does not look like those slower growing types I've come across, and based on the story from Jason, and accounting for the size of the piece in this period of time, I don't think this will be a slow grower. Of course, as said, the growth will be what it is. The other option is to wait for some other individual to grow it out and sell to us at a higher price as normal market trends go. I have several methods in place which I practice for my other corals which I believe will be very conducive to a successful growout with this chalice, and which will also make fragging and distributing it easy enough. The 1 year time period is approximate, but hopefully not far off based on my experiences with other chalices. I'm not too worried about losing the piece. Chalices are pretty dang tough corals. So long as we're sent a healthy piece, the risk of that should be absolutly minimal.
I am open to the idea of splitting the frags as they grow and sending them out. Certainly an option. I'm not an authority on chalices, though I've worked with more than my share, but perhaps someone can chime in here as to whether fragging it so soon would inhibit faster new growth or not. Obviously, for a chalice there is a certain cost in health/resources to frag it, and some time for it to heal before growing again. So long as fragging it regularly will not slow its growth, that works for me. I have not fragged my ECC or others, and the growth seems to be exponential as the rim perimiter increases. My original plan would have involved growing it out to 10 eyes and then fragging and shipping simultaeniously for everyone. I would hate to cost everyone time, so thoughts on this are appreciated.
I hope that answers some peoples' questions, and I am excited to see how this comes together.
Regards,
Zack
