My new 75g tank!!

Some algae has taken over in the past few days. What should I do to get rid of it? There is only a trace of ammonia and very little nitrates. Here are some photos of the algae...the second photo shows it growing on the glass.

Honestly its part of the cycle.... if you had a tailspot blenny a tank or a clean up crew it would take care of it.

Also what are your phosphates? Assuming you used RO water for the initial fill up?

I'd wait for the ammonia and nitrites to come down then add an algea eating fish.... then get a good invert clean up crew shortly after.

like bradon said once levels stabalize add a blenny or a tang, if the algae get to bad you may need to borrow a sea hare or something from donny to get rid of the hair algae. the tangs and blennies usually will only eat on new growth tips, they dont usually consume the whole patch of hair algae.

I have a lawnmower blenny in my 29 gallon...does the tailspot do a better job? Phosphates should be good...I bought saltwater from Donny and have been topping it off with RO water. Plus, I have no fish in there yet, so I am not feeding anything. I recommended a group order for cleanup crew critters hoping I could get some people on board because I knew I would need several things to keep my new tank clean.

Good idea...I probably won't be able to afford a tang for a while, so I'll check with Alex/Donny about borrowing a sea hare.

So you are cycling it on live rock alone? You could put a pair of hardy somethings in there (not the usual damsels since they are hard to catch and nobody wants them), but the little green whatever they are (my age is showing, huh) would be good. I think they are damsels, but are at least cute, and if you only have 2, they sometimes don't last too long after the tank cycles (though I still have 3/7 in my tank). Tommy has a billion.

And yellow tangs aren't too expensive. Purples are very hardy, but expensive. Maybe Donny could watch for a deal..... I thought Alex wanted to get rid of his powder brown (or did it die?). I bet Donny would sell the pitiful regal out of his tank for cheap, but I don't know if he'll ever be pretty.....

Well, since I started it with saltwater straight from 5th Day, I figured it would not have to go through the whole cycling process. There was a little die off at first, but ammonia never went higher than 1ppm and nitrates stayed fairly low too. I have 2 hermit crabs in there right now. I think you are refering to Green Chromis. If anybody has a few they could spare me, that would be great...Tommy, anyone?? If not, I guess I'll pick some up at 5th day soon. I am really strapped for cash right now with Christmas, car repair, having to get a new dishwasher, and bills, etc. I definately don't want any damsels.

I'll probably wait a few more weeks to get a Tang. I think Alex was trying to pawn that powder brown off on me the other day...is it the one he thinks is ugly? I might actually consider it if it is cheap and would help with the algae. Whats the story with the Regal? I would like one eventually, but not one that looks like it's been through a blender...lol. I would love to find a pretty purple tang! Would it eventually be ok to have a yellow, regal, purple, and sailfin tang all in my 75? Probably not, but I'm sure I can get a rial out of someone by asking.

That would be too many tangs in a 75 gallon tank. About 2 small ones would be about the max for it. Green chromis (yes, that's what I was trying to remember) cost about $10 or less usually. I only have 3 and I'm tempted to give them to you, but I would miss them. I don't know if your tank will cycle with live rock and hermit crabs alone (unless it's a big pile of well established live rock and that means you might not get a cycle at all). I've got some lovely brown/green button polyps for you too....

I love my purple tang, but they are pretty aggressive, so you need to decide what you want in there first (tang wise) and add the purple last (and a small one at that). Brian has a lovely small powder blue (that I'm sure he wouldn't give up) that I am insanely jealous of). Even one little powder blue or regal would be nice, but they have to be first in. I've never been able to add either of them successfully after I've had another tang (and purples live for YEARS). The powder browns aren't very pretty colorwise, but they aren't ugly either.

The regal in Donny's shop (the beat up one) was terrorized and looks like he was almost killed in some other tank and brought as a last chance save to Donny. I think it's bulletproof and may eventually look good again (in many months). Might be worth a look after you are sure that your tank is cycled.

Julie:

I just liek the tail spot vs lawnmower blenny's because of SPS.... lawnmowers and some of the other blenny's are more likely to munch polyps.

I think that is the case pretty much. I'll just get some chromis next week.
