My new SPS Tank

I don’t think you understand how confused many of us are by this. I’d say 99% of people starting a tank with what you started with would end up with bleached out corals and dinos. You’re truly a master with this approach. Awesome stuff man.

Maybe I´m just a lucky guy :-)

Maybe I missed it - do you carbon dose?

No. I just dose kalkwasser and carbocalcium.

I think reefkeeping is very easy but people love to complicate it.

What do we need to succeed?

1 - Good Flow
2- Good Ligth
3 - Good Parameters
4 - Dose alk, ca and mg

That´s all

Best Regards

There is something that is different from your tanks vs others. Ie the current consensus is that dry-rock = bad, sps too soon = bad, not enough diversity = bad, zero no3 and po4 = bad, not dosing a million different additives = bad. Yet this proves it wrong. It seems to me we should be able to figure out what it is.

Is it the water source, the lights (you had many tanks with different lights I would guess), the intensity of the lights or something else.

If you're up to it, it would be good with specs on all your previous tanks (big task I know) so we can find the common denominator. Given the simplicity you describe, its likely not much.

The only thing that is the same in all my tanks is me.

Because each tank was different. Some I had sand, some BB, some with HQI, some with T5, some with Leds, some with calcium reactor, some with balling, some with biocalcium only, some with kalkwasser and etc.

Some tanks I used dry rocks , some with plastic rocks , some with midia like siporax and matrix.

But basically I try to keep it simple and no3 and po4 close to zero.

I can make a list for you for all tanks that I had but you will see that each one has different setups

Best Regards

And how many corals from you tank were ordered from american distributors like wwc and coral farmers the like?

I´m from Brazil, I have no idea where my corals come from.

Thanks. It's very interesting. There is something here. You obviously do the right thing. What it puts to shame is all the other recommendations or no-go's. It is possible to grow acros with a very simple setup. Many of the things that people will state as facts are not true.

What really troubles my mind the most is that you do not see dino's with close to no nutrients. I did a test the other day, driving my po4 to zero for a while and there it was. Taking it back up and getting a bit of green algae and it was gone. It's quite fascinating.

I don't buy its the corals themselves. We see these issues in both the US and EU. But there are many other variables here:

# How often do you put your hands in the tank
# Temp?
# Chiller? Ie stable temp
# Salinity
# Salt mix used?
# How high are the lights mounted? Given you run it simple, I'm assuming no PAR readings
# I recall you put acropora in quite quickly after the cycle (folks commented the tank was too clean). Any acclimation done? Or just straight out the box?
# Do you measure alk stability?

And the list goes on...But fascinating.

I see you have a lot of flow, I am considering adding more to my tank with good sps growth. I currently have a 48x24x24 with 2 mp40. Thinking of adding a gyre. What are the dimensions of your tank and how much flow do you have?

The point that I was going to get at from my previous question, was that with the revolving door this hobby and the popularity of online coral purchases, may point to a single source for the bryopsis problem we're seeing.

It's just a thought, but there is a good possibility that we're all experiencing this new trend because of the popularity of mail order corals.

I've never had such a hard time with bryopsis and nuisance algae until I set up my most recent tank with corals from all over the country.

I noticed the 15% water change monthly. Thats not a whole lot. Interesting.

I was expecting a lot more - to replace trace elements. But he said he was going to switch to balling method; which supplements trace. But then said different tanks had different 'Big 3' supplemental methodologies.... Interesting.

Also interesting that he does not directly have filtration setup to attack increased nutrients. Just basic stuff. I expected a carbon dosing of some sort after people said he ran Zeovit for a long awhile.

@Reefinity do you carbon dose and use gfo?

He said no to gfo, and I'm guessing simple means no carbon.

@Roberto Denadai Would you mind sharing your Hydra settings? There is a lot of light there, but I'm guessing you don't run them at full blast and mainly for spread. Just guessing

I have 1 x mp40, 1 x Nero5 and 1 x Gyre. My tank 42x24x19

I think you will love the gyre. The flow here is very strong and I have amazing polyp extension in my SPS

Cheers

I have the first Hydra 52 with a controller , I bought them 6 years ago.

T5 : now I´m using 2x Soma 6500K and 2x ATI Blue Plus 10 hours daily

3x Hydra 52 : 2 hours ramp time - 70% all blues, 25% white, 100% UV, 0% green and 10% red 8 hours daily

Best Regards

What kind of salt do you use, Roberto? Sorry for all of these questions

I buy the cheapest when I need it. I already use in this tank aquaforest, red sea, tropic marin and reefflowers

Thanks, on hydra32 here (3). Been thinking about T5 on the side as well. But seems you have run all LED previously with good results. I find with the LEDs, spread is important. Not too close to the tank and not too intense.
