Here is a picture of my 5.5 gallon Qt setup. I am going to be quarantining any new fish and my current fish (2 clownfish) with this for a minimum of 1 month with copper. I learned the hard way that you don’t get away very easily without quarantine, lost a Tomini tang tang due to velvet or ich and a royal gramma. I also have paraguard for new fish before I treat them with copper. Any tips of advice for my quarantine setup and for when I start quarantine. Also I have to leave my tank fallow for 78 days due to the possible velvet or ich in it. [emoji1]

Here are the pictures of it. As well as my DT (a 40 gal)

Looks great.

I’d prefer to limit copper to 14 days and then transfer to a sterile tank. That requires a second tank, but sometimes you can find them for cheap.

Did you cycle the quarantine tank?

I added half tank water and then I’ve had bio cubes and sponge media in my display for the last couple months so that should do the job for 2 clownfish. I also have a API test kit and will definitely be watching my parameters regularly. I will look into how people use copper and the amount of days they use it for thanks!

Seems like you have it covered!

I also like the transfer to sterile tank after copper method. Instead of another tank, I transfer fish to 5g bucket w heater and air stone for a day. Disinfect qt. Let it dry. And there you have a sterile qt to return fish to :)

Only thing is I would add air stone to qt.

Only thing I would add to this is that you have to get rid of the bio media that was in the copper and start with bacteria in a bottle.

Perfect! I was kinda thinking the same thing but didn’t know what I should do with the fish as the quarantine needs to be cleaned and dried! I’ll definitely use this! How long do you keep the fish in the sterile water for?

I’m a bit of an extremist because I’ve had a bad experience. I keep all fish in unmedicated water for 30 days for observation. Sterile qt is hard on fish. So, when done w meds and brought into sterile qt, I do it up nice. Substrate, live rock, that kinda thing. Try to make it homey. U know?

So if you see no symptoms you use no medication what so ever? Yea homey is always nice. I have some spare rocks I can add. Might skip the substrate though for easy cleaning [emoji106]

Thanks for this thread. Setting up my QT now.

Awesome [emoji106] I’ve lost a few fish from parasites that could’ve been avoided so I’m going to be a little more patient now and quarantine. I’ve only lost a few fish I can imagine loosing 1000$ dollars worth of fish over a single ich paasite that made it In somehow.

No. I wasn’t clear. Sorry. I medicate. Then, after medication, 30 days observation w no meds. Fish must be symptom free for 30 days w no meds to graduate to DT.

Ohhhh. I was confused. So when You medicate you use copper usually or is there any exception where you wouldn’t use it. Other than inverts, scaleless fish ect... as in they are showing different symptoms.

Kudos for quarantining. I’d also suggest shorter time in copper and then transfer to a clean tank. Copper isn’t great for fish, so it’s best to limit it as much as possible.

Symptoms or not, I do copper for all fish that aren’t sensitive to copper. If unsure, I check w the folks here. The type of copper I have (Cupramine) has a 14 day treatment cycle. Then I transfer to sterile qt. Then 2 rounds of prazi. Then homey sterile qt for 30 days of observation w no meds.
