Yeah...like when I set my girlfriends tank up I used all dry rock and sand...Still spaghetti worms made themselves abundant enough to gross her out as much as I tried convincing her of their benefits.

Yes it is amazing sometimes where all those life forms come from ... maybe those were in the sand ... or if the dry rock was not artificial rock maybe from the rock ...
They probably came in on a rubble rock I seeded the tank with from my 90, which is still pretty amazing considering my 6-line has seriously depleted every visible life form lol. If it wasnt for that fish I would have mandarins...my sump looks like a moving pile of rice at night time with all the pods. The display is like a ghost town at night.
And a touch of today's observation preparation.
Lights have been down to the 7hr total 5hr noon schedule. I did not look at the sand yesterday due to the "you can't boil water while
You're watching it," rule of physics. I am about 3 days from another water change, so we will see if I will be siphoning the powdery brown silicate munchers or If they will have receded enough to just die off with new salt?
In the meantime I have some equipment to clean up for resale and a guitar than needs played...better get to work!

Hello sand! Here is an actinic pic that shows the exact locations of the diatom patches. Soon I will take a picture with the whites, but the contrast made a very good diagram for growth tracking, so I'll throw a blue and a white picture up as it shrinks or grows.
Here is a nice blob growing on the surface of the stink tank. When it goes down the overflow the skimmer will devour it.

Its about three times the girth as yours, but it isn't the size that counts...its the motion of the...bubbles. Lol. The cup is bigger than my cereal bowl too...so I could keep an emperor angel or 2 in there...not. Haha

Alrighty, progress of the display as of today! Looking better every day!

At this point it seems my cyano has been mostly relocated and I am still dealing with diatoms and using up the last of my salt. When I order the other stuff and run out the battle may be back on the right path. As of now it has t gotten worse but the diatoms are still present.
One thing I have not added to this tank that I had in all my others are a couple mollies. They love eating diatoms for some reason. They smell bad to me.

Ok so this is new! The cyano has started to disappear and hair algae is growing! I am not in any way shape or form removing the cyano, so it seems that this scrubber is going through an extended version of the algae cycle. As the cyano in here is reducing populations, none is showing up in the display! So this means something good is happening, just slowly.

I guess it is clearing up a bit? Reduced lighting is all I have done besides watching it.
Oh and I haven't had to clean my glass for 3 days. For a while it was a daily wipe down, now that the hair algae is overpowering the cyano it may be sucking out more nutrients. At this point I am still not sure if this was all worth the time, but it hasn't killed anything, I haven't done any hard work, and the fish are fat and happy.

Cyanobacteria is responsible for the irradiation of most of the ancient oxygen intolerant beings before out atmosphere was breathable. I believe using it as a means of purification will benefit my tank more than any mechanical or chemical means. I hope to eventually be able to turn the skimmer off and sell it for some corals
Now that some time has passed and you see what happened with this system do you still feel you can turn off the skimmer or even remove it all together?
Well it looks like progress ..... less cyanos and seems like less diatoms ...

Take it with you to an LFS so you can see how a coral you are interested in fluoresces when you shine the Blue Light on it .... Great for seeing the real colors ...

Hey that's what I do, only I use a full spectrum Cree 3 watt flash light that looks just like my tank with just the whites...I bet paired up would look just like my LEDs with both channels on. What color blue is that light?
