I would tell your friend to not vape close to your tank. Those fumes would definitely get into the water.

Cant say this is the same for everyone. But mine runs consistently sweet for about 8 months now. After weeks of checking, testing, and any other finegaling we could do, it ended up being my VSV dosing. (vodka, sugar, vinegar) Now i dont know the particular strains of bacteria names, but the one that sugar carbon dosing affects is what made my skimmate have the sweetish smell. To test we removed that portion of the vsv, let it run for a month and the smell changed. We readded it back into the solution and the smell returned. So our conclusion was, the particular bacteria that flourished using sugar as a carbon source was being removed at a higher rate that others and created the nice oder, for lack of better word. So, just as an opinion, it could be that your tank has a higher level of these particular bacteria's in it than other types and as they die off and get skimmed up, create this nice smell instead of the the wasteater treatment plant.

My tank smells sickly sweet and it has snails up its butt (we allowed to curse on here?). My filter stopped working days ago too. Note: my roomate smokes a vape and many fruity flavors. So im thinking either its the snails or his vape is absorbing into the water somehow. Its an awful smell even though its not a poop smell.
