My systems really been in "sync" lately

It's funny how this turned into a thread about ph.
I don't test my pH. :rolleyes:
I never use to until BRS made a video about how their alk and calc consumption doubled when they raised their ph. I was worried I'm missing out on potential growth
 
And by in sync, I mean that for a few hours every day this week, my temp and ph were numerically identical! I'm guessing this can't be too uncommon as the number sets are pretty closely related.

But hey, have a look at this.

Anyone else happen to have any cool tank coincidences?

As long as the decimal point stays in their respective locations all is well [emoji23]
 
And as far as ph is concerned, the only ph measurement I REALLY care about is the ph inside my reactor. Even that is more of a stability thing than a specific number. Ph is one of the biggest causes of unnecessary anxiety in this hobby. Just my 2 cents.

So true and agree absolutely with the last line - Ph is one of the biggest causes of unnecessary anxiety in this hobby.
Partly due to the conception that higher pH yields better growth but the problem becomes to maintain stable high pH ...

Ill third that notion lol I really stopped chasing system ph years ago, but I am neurotic about my reactor ph.

What's the difference in setting your reactor ph to something or just setting the bubble rate needed to keep your alk steady and let the ph be where it goes in the reactor? Is it for regulators that can't keep a steady bubble rate?

I go by reactor pH because my drip is more of a straight flow, and bubble count is way to tedious. I can make my reactor do anything I want with a tiny tweak of the needle valve to raise or lower the ph in the chamber . much easier to control the potency of the effluent that way. A controller is handy and can help prevent dropping ph to low, but not essential.

Adam, I guess what I'm asking is why not ignore ph in the reactor all together and just adjust the co2 to where it holds your tank alk steady?
 
This is 2L of saturated kalk a day, calcium reactor and skimmer intake fed from about 15 feet up the side of the house exterior. I have crazy high CO2 in my home. I have no idea if it makes a difference in growth but I’m fine running the outdoor air to the skimmer.

Stable ph in the reactor in my opinion, IS the best way to adjust the c02, Its the only really way we can be precise. And the ph level is very crucial to determining how and when to adjust if necessary.

Having said that, I ran an old koralin without a Ph meter or controller for years. It's very possible to simply test alk often, and tune the drip and bubble rate to the tanks alk demands. In fact my back up had been set up this way till only a couple weeks ago when i finally threw an older apex on that system. Still, the best way to adjust, is increase or decrease bubble count as this will strengthen or dilute the effluent. Although sometimes i will also open the effluent valve a little. I guess its just something you get tuned into once your around it a while lol . the key is to test often, and you will know what your reactor is doing and your tanks uptake.

Maybe I’m doing it backwards. I am keeping a stable effluent and just increasing or decreasing co2 according to demand.

This is what I do too. That way I only have one variable to mess with.

I not sure which one you are saying you do, lol. I think both ways only have one variable. One way you hold ph steady and increase effluent and the other is steady effluent but adjust reactor ph.
