I would remove them. In my opinion the less places detritus can land and get caught the less places they have to stay and dirty the water. Less stuff in the sump the easier it is to clean.

Unless you plan on cleaning your sump every 2 weeks no matter what.

Can I keep the rings and now I have carbon and phosphate sponge

You can keep them if you want, I just think they're going to cause more harm than good in your system. I would remove them completely.

Here's a quick three minute video explaining why using these media rings is a bad idea and is quite outdated:

Okay so what do I use to filter it? And my friend asked what I was doing and I told her and her reply was I need to get out more-_-

Skimmer, pellets, GFO are all great filtration tools. There are a lot of nice tanks that may just run a skimmer. If you use good RO/DI water, a quality salt mix and stay on top of your water changes a skimmer maybe all you need to be successful.

Also, look into ChemiPure Elite, it's a prebagged item you can run right inside of your sump where there is plenty of water to flow through the bag. It is a carbon and GFO mix. I ran it in a HOB filter for a while in my first setup and it worked well.

Tell her to go buy a purse, works well with my GF, LOL.

Nice looking sump. Hope it works out for you. If I were in your shoes, here is what I would do:

1. Remove the ceramic stuff on the entry side. they hold detritus and will cause more harm than good. also, 1 blue filter floss pad should be sufficient. it will trap a TON of YUCk and will clog quickly.
2. Why do you have a filter sock for the skimmer outlet? this is completely not needed.
3. while the slits in your end cap will prevent the pump from picking things up, they are too small in my opinion and may clog un-necessarily and will restrict the inlet of the pump. I would scrap that and either go with none or drill a bunch of holes. maybe 1/4" or so diameter.
4. your Ro/Di filter seems to be missing a cartridge. IMO, you need: 1. Micron Filter, 2. Carbon Block, 3. RO membrane, 4. Di media. (in that order)
