My 125 gal mixed reef tank is about 2 years old and all parameters are in check. I did a major cleaning ( all pumps and power heads, sump and pre-filters for all pumps) changed carbon. I do this once a month right around the 5th.This month I did it on the 3rd.(go me) I have not done anything that I normally don't do and my ro/di unit is still running 0tds but my water is really cloudy.:twitch: Any idea why?

Could be a bacterial die off. I don't know could be 1 of a bunch or reasons. Did you match the water before you put it in?

Yep my new water was at 79 and my tank was at 80.2 said the apex. I tried to take a pic but in the pic the water looks clearer than it does in real life.

Are all your filter's clean, Are you running any Algae scrubber's or fuges?

All filters are clean. I cleaned the pre-filters on my skimmer, return pump. I don't really have a fuge but I do have a big hand full of cheto. All green and no white. I just checked my ammonia again and it is still 0.

I dont know then thats a good one hard to actually tell without seeing it. But as long as the thread stays alive I am sure one of the greats on here will help find a answer. good luck.

Thanks Steven. Ill post a pic but like I said it looks better in the pic than it really does.

Algae scrubber wouldn't cloud up water. Caulerpa might. Usually cloudy water is some sort of bacterial bloom or to much calcium its precipitating out. Have u started any type of dosing? Or up the dose on vin/vodka dosing or new bio pellets or new reactor?

No on the new dosing. I did just change the carbon in my brs gfo and carbon reactor that I have been running for two months now. It was the 3rd time I have changed the carbon. My calcium is up from 460 to 480. I will cut my dosing pump down a little to get back down to a constent 460.

It doesn't look overly cloudy to me but to play it safe you should do some water changes till it clears up. Better safe than sorry.

So I checked in my sump and the filter pad is brown-ish red almost like clay. Skimmer is the same and my gfo and carbon reactor was also filled with red stuff. I just replaced the carbon two day's ago and it was totally gummed up. I replaced carbon and gfo. What is the red stuff a sing of? Not sure what why it was so red and if that has any baring on my cloudiness issue.

YAY!! So it does seem to be something you stirred up during cleaning? or do you think that replacing those items was just the fix to what ever was going on?

Not really sure what was going on to be truthfully. I do water changes every week or two at the most and clean my sump and pre-filters once a month so I don't think I stirred it up but I guess I could have. But I am happy to say that after two full day's it SEEMS to be back to normal.:xd:

It could have been your GFO. Do you tuble yours? I tumble mine and last week after messing with the carbon I had GFO fines all over the tank and the water was very cloudy. The GFO rubs against itself and grinds into a dust making the water cloudy. The good news is that it won't hurt anything. No real bad news. My skimmer was much more red/orange than normal and carbon gets really gummed up. It also looks like a small diatom bloom on the sand if enough settles.
