my yellow tang looks sick, help please

in the past few days ive noticed my tangs fins are looking ragged, and now his face is looking rather pale. hes been in the tank for about a month now, and has been eating the same pellets the previous owner was feeding him and he was healthy. not sure why this is happening but is there something i can do? thanks

Get him some Nori (seaweed) to eat also. Tangs like to graze throughout the day. A healthy diet will help it stave off illness. Are there any other signs of injury or illness? Any spots on it? Is he being attacked by other fish?

No spots or anything, seems to be getting along with my other fish. I've been giving him dry algae sheets

Not sure if this is rubbish but it's rather old too. I'll try getting some nori tho

What size tank? any aggressive fish or other tangs in the tank? Do you feed him Nori? It is a very important part of their diet, and without it, their lateral line/ fins will start to sort of deteriorate and they will seem unhealthy. I feed mine about a quarter size every day, and throw in another piece afterwards in case he wants more later on

My other fish are ocellaris clown and royal gramma, along with a cleaner shrimp. I feel like he actually gets along with my clown really well.

Yea, I don't see why they would be a problem. Only time my saddleback and yellow tang get into a little scuffle, its because he got too close to the anemone. It's probably something with the diet.

What about water quality? Have you done a water test today, or recently? temp/nitrate/ammonia/trite/etc.

My temp is at 76 and I haven't tested water due to the fact I loaned my brother my test kit. I recently added a sump so I should really test it. I'm using chemipure elite and cheato in sump and run reef octo skimmer. I'll try feeding nori everyday, but to this point he only ever ate pellets with success.... I dunno

Like the small tropical pellets that are usually red? Stranger..He never ate brine/mysis/krill?

I'd definitely test that water though, you never know.

Check your water parameters first and then we can figure out what is going on.

This is what he was raised eating so I stuck with it. I feed my other fish a variety of stuff from different flake foods to different frozen foods and he partakes in some other foods too

Sounds like malnutrition. I'd stick the algae sheets in there and let him go at it all he wants. If anything he'd be the one pickin on the other fish.

yeah, i know, but i really dont need the tang ***** all over me. he is in the same size tank that he was raised in and hes considerably small. he has lived healthy up until the move over to my tank.

I feed my Tangs Romaine Lettuce 3 times per week, using 2 big leafs.

Don't worry, our tang police is more like the tang neighborhood watch (except we don't shoot fish that carry iced tea and skittles).

I agree with you totally Dana. I wouldnt mention tang and tank size on here these guys would chew you up and spit you out.

It's the life of a fish were concerned about not someone's feelings......there are reasons why tank sizes are recommended. Push the envelope and its the fish that pays the consequences, period!
