my yellow tang looks sick, help please

Nana,do you have any helpful input to add? Or are you just looking for an argument...
The tank size is what it is. Im sure you would consider it too small, so there's your answer.
I'm just doing my best to help my fish get healthy again, if you don't have some positive input then please refrain from posting. If you do have some good ideas for me by all means please share.

Ive got the same yellow tang in my 30g that was in there 3 years ago. And hes extremely happy. I feed him brine shrimp and algae strips. The only time i notice him pale in color is first thing in the morning, but as soon as i turn the lights on he brightens right back up. This is normal for yellow tangs.

That's interesting jenn, I'll have to pay attention to that today. I mean, he gets along fine with my other fish, and actually is inseparable from my clownfish, they're buddies!
Like reefing mentioned, I think there may be some nutrition issues which I will address with some additional options in food for him -)
 
Get the tang nori and soak it in garlic and selcon...rotate which one you use each time. They really need a varied diet. I got a yellow tang for free and it has lateral line erosion. While its top fin didn't grow back it is a very nice dark yellow now compared to the pale yellow it was when I got it. I feed frozen Cubes soaked in garlic or selcon daily. I also mix in herbivore pellets and dried seaweed.

heres a dumb question, but do i find these items at my lfs?
 
Well I grabbed some garlic x and algae sheets. As soon as I put it in the tank my tang started picking at it. Hopefully this helps. Thanks

Ok so an update of my tang. His fins are looking worse, but he is eating the algae every day about a quarter size. I dunno if this is a situation where it's gonna get worse before it gets better. It's in his lateral fins ( I think)
I did test my water this morning
Ammonia 0
Nitrate 0
Nitrite 0
Phosphate 0.25
 
Somebody might be nipping on his fins. Keep a close eye om the tank. Try watching from a distance. My fish are usually on their best behavior when I'm in front of the tank watching them. Its when I'm not home of across the room that they act out.
As far as buying dried seaweed from you LFS, don't. I get packs of notebook sized nori sheets from an asian market for $2.00 for a package of about 10 sheets. They sell it as Sushi wrap. My sailfin and my lavender Tangs both love it as does my lawnmower blenney. I keep a clip with nori in the tank at all times. When ever its empty I refill it.
 
If you exhaust all other options and he's still looking unhealthy, get a voltage meter (<20 bucks at a hardware store) and check for stray voltage. Sounds obscure, but I had a yellow tang that started looking sick in spite of all my efforts; later learned that tangs are more sensitive than most fish to stray voltage, and found that this had been the problem in my tank-- but only after losing the tang :(

I found an Asian market close to me. I'll try nori.
I did a voltage test, and I actually get a negative reading.
 
If he's eating, your on the right track. Now lets try to get him to eat something with Vitamin C.
Providing a vitamin supplement (including vitamin C) can help provide for their nutritional needs, and vitamin C can help prevent or reduce Lateral Line Erosion (LLE), adding vitamins to the food, or adding a liquid vitamin into the water. Some hobbyists also report success with supplemental foods such as previously boiled or frozen zucchini, broccoli, spinach, and leaf lettuce.
 
So these items contain vitamin c?
I've tried watching to see if one of my fish are nipping at him and I don't see it happening.
I picked up some nori today and soaked on garlic x
Within 2 hours it was almost all gone so he is eating well
 
Nice. Now we are on our way. Should only take a couple weeks to mass improvements if he keeps eating well.
 
an update on my tang.
he is looking much better now, and his fins are growing back nicely. hes eating nori everyday and loves it. also i removed the chemipure elite from my sump
